The only real way to resume the download where you last stopped would be to put your computer in hybernation or sleep mode, but that depends on how old your computer is and what OS you have. If you have dial up and you turn it off and on again it has to scan what you have first then it resumes; so it will take longer. Computers are made to run 24/7. They do simulations of years of running without turning them off and they run at full speed; especially if you got your computer from a major dealer. So you don't even need sleep/hybernation mode. What they are for is to conserve energy, has nothing to do with overheating. Turning off your computer is for energy conservation, and maybe throw in hacking, but nothing else. So assuming that you bought your computer at a store, or a professional computer builder; it is perfectly safe to have your computer running 24/7. Matter as a fact, turning the machines on and off is more damaging. And it also sounds like you have dial up Internet access. Either that or you have connected to a server that is a major bottleneck or getting overloaded. I would really recommend getting DSL broadband; it is not that expensive. Please don't be like one person i know that spends 10 dollars a month for dial up but won't fork over a measly 5 bucks more for basic DSL??? You can get it from AT&t for 15 bucks a month and you would be finished in a day instead of 9 days. And on dial-up good luck if it doesnt stall on you and get a hangups because there are a lot of problems going that long for a download. God Luck and God Bless.

Keeping you computer on for long time cannot be a problem if provided with ideal conditions. i.e the room should be dust free (as much as possible), cool and humidity levels should be lower than 80%. High humidity attracts dust to the fans resulting in the fan getting stuck because of the sticky dust.
You can first download a Download Manager to speed up downloading... yes... it will speed up the download rate of on even dial ups. I recommend installing a good Anti-Spyware and Adware(Lavasoft Adware SE Personal) + a good reputated anti-virus and a firewall (zone alarm should do fine without complicated setups). If you're using internet explorer's download option, then I don't think you could resume your download. So its better that you could use a download manager like DAP (Download Accelerator Plus).
Note: Although the website say that its adware free, I haven't encountered this. Its better you download the file(s) you'd like to and delete DAP from your system for maximum safety.

computers can be left on for months. take servers for example, they are left on 24/7 for months on end. the only thing you need to ensure is that your pc is well ventilated, ie nothing blocking the fans and no dust in the fans either. this way it will keep the PC cool and stop your processor overheating.
as for the download you could stop it, but only if you are using a download manager or a torrent program like utorrent or bitcomet. these allow a download to be stopped and re started. if you are just using the standard windows to download it then you cant stop it or else it will be deleted.

Leaving your computer on for that period of time isn't the most intelligent thing to do for a variety of reasons. A few such reasons are if you are running Windows then your Operating system isn't the most stable ever but that is only a minor problem that you shouldn't really have to worry about. Second the longer your computer is left on and left online the more likely it is to catch a virus which in turn can be very hazardous to your hardware. Not only can you catch a sort of virus but it give your comp a great chance to be hacked especially while downloading a huge file such as that you leave some integral ports open. Your hardware in general should be OK for that period of time as long as you take care of your computer and keep it clean both inside and out just keep in mind that some of the biggest computer killers out there are Heat and Dust (static is created by high amounts of dust in the air) I wouldn't recommend leaving it on for 9 days straight despite the fact that others do. It is just bad computer ju ju your pretty much just asking for trouble but if it has to be done it has to be done just be sure you run your virus scans every day and keep all your definitions up to date.

Leaving it on would not hurt it as long as the computer fan is working properly.
30kb/p download speed? You must be using a dial-up connection.
If your connection to the internet is lost, for any reason, as long as you don't do any deleting of temp files, it will start downloading again where it left off.

From a hardware point of view your computer is perfectly safe to be left on for 9 days, 9 weeks or 9 months. The computer is more likely to be damaged by turning it on and off every day; believe it or not many people never turn their PCs off. If you have a CRT monitor however you will want to turn this off.

It shouldn't matter if you only do it for once in a while, just try not to do it all the time. Also, PCs are generally pretty good at not overheating but you might just want to watch and make sure it's ok. at least turn it off once in a while to give it a break and let it cool down

I download but I do not leave pc on too long at a time.
I do allow a cooling down period, although if your fans are working well there probably is no need.
I do stop & start my downloads. A, because it slows the system down & B, because I know it will resume where it left off.
I would never leave my pc on constantly for 9 days.
I actually have heard of them catching fire. Take care.

PC's are not overly affected by being left on, as they are designed to operate for long periods, but you should not really leave many electrical devices turned on if you are planning to leave the house - fridge freezers are obviously an exception.
If you are going to be home for the full time you are using your PC then it should be okay as you can keep checking it.

p.c,s are designed to be kept on dor extremely long periods of time, thats why they are kitted out with all the cooling and ventelation(cpu fans, rear case fans, graphic card fans)
as for the worry of overheating, make sure your p.c is located near a windows or a open area, and if we have a extended hot period like a drought, keep you p.c next to a open window,or do what i did, take of the side panel of you p.c if you have one,and even better buy a usb fan like the Antec Notebook Cooler USB powered with 2x Fans from http://www.misco.co.uk/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=257430&sourceid=2002,and position it next to your p.c pointing into the side of it,combining with the cpu fan and the other fans in the case this will be more than enough to keep your p.c cool at all times
alternatively you could think about fitting water cooling to your p.c,however this should be carried out by a expert or youself if you know how, water cooling kits start from around £50 but the Swiftech H20-220 Apex Ultra Watercooling Kit (Socket 462/478/LGA775/754/939/940) from http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=WC-014-SW&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=193,is a excellent kit,it includes
- Apogee waterblock
- MCR220 Radiator
- MCP655 12V DC Pump
- MCRES-MICRO reservoir
- MCB120 Radbox radiator mounting adapter
- 7/16" ID Tubing
- Adjustable pump speed
this will keep your p.c mega cool and also capable of overclocking to the extremes
any problems let me know
good luck gray!
