Hypernation is the computer writing it's memory to the hard drive and shutting down. Stand by is it's waiting for you to press a button or key and start back up, quickly.
A more green approach is the hibernation ... This also disconnects you from the internet - which, in an article I read lately, is a good way to stop hacking, etc... as your pc isn't sitting there on all night for incoming issues.
I press the button on the pc, and to sleep it goes. I guess I am saving a light bulbs worth of electricity, but ... in the long run, it's worth it.
Hope that helps!

If you aren't using the computer for a long period of time, put it on standby/hibernate or shut it down.

Both would save energy.
Standby-The computer is still on, with just enough power to keep all the settings.
Hibernation-Copies the current ram into the hard disk, and basically shuts off. This is for when you want to have the exact same stuff on the computer when you turn it back on.

Hibernation is if you want to save power on your laptop, mainly. Standby is better if you want to just instantly start your computer up in the am.

You should shut it down completely. Sure, it'll take longer to boot up than if you put it on standby, but the longer your computer is running without you sitting there (and even if you are on it, especially on the internet) the more opportunity there is for it to get viruses. Plus, if something goes wrong with the electricity in your house, it could screw up your computer, even though your computer should be plugged into a surge protector/power strip anyway. I would invest in good power strips, though, cuz once there was a surge at my house and it completely trashed all the power strips that had anything plugged into them. They kept the stuff from blowing up, but they fried. Invest in good power strips, even if they are more expensive. Buying them the first time around is better than buying less expensive ones you'll have to replace later.

I put mine in standby. Somewhere along the line I was told that rebooting a computer all the time is hard on the drive.

whilst your laptop is hibernating, this is powered off - so sure, you are able to unplug the means twine and it won't harm something. quite, the only distinction between hibernate and standard off is that with hibernate, the laptop saves a picture of its memory previously turning off, so as that once you turn it on returned, the memory is restored and the laptop is decrease back the place you left it (extremely of having to totally restart).

Shutdown saves more power and is healthier for the computer, but if you need to access your files quickly then stand-by is the one for you.
