If the laptop is less than 5 years old, it should have a "USB PORT". Buy a hard drive that uses "USB".

3 things to thing about:
USB/FIREWIRE - if your laptop has a firewire port then you can buy a firewire hard drive. It's much, MUCH faster.

Powered/usb-powered - some hard drives are powered by wall electricity, those hard drives are much more efficient.

fan/no fan - some hard drives have internal fans (usually powered by wall electricity). It keeps the hard drive cool and makes it last much longer. Perferable if you choose this, get one that plugs into the wall.

Yes, an external hard drive has a USB port connection that can plug right in to your USB port on your LAP TOP. The external hard drive has nothing to do with your lap top hard drive space. That's why it is called, "external hard drive".

new laptops have tons of hard disk space. I believe that yes, these hard drives can just be hooked up through the USB port.

You sure can. I'm no computer whiz, but I bought an external hard drive and connected it directly to my laptop. Simple USB cable. The computer will detect the new hardware and take care of everythign for you. Good luck.

yes they can, newer laptops hold lots of space. make sure ur externeal hardrive is USB 2.0, cause most laptops dont have firewire ports, which some external drives come with only firewire.

It is possible of corse. I recommend an external hard drive i bought from Fry's Electronics, it's called Maxtor, they have many different one's at Fry's, or you can try Circuit City, or any electronic store (radio shack maybe) just make sure it is compatible with your laptop

You can use a 2.5" ATA hard-drive with USB. You need the harddrive and the harddrive box that has a USB connector. You can just plug the hd just like a normal USB flash drive.

most external hard drives are either usb or firewire driven nowadays. so, in theory, your computer type shouldn't matter as long as your computer supports the connection method of the drive you buy.
