i mean someone gave me 3 hard drives out of computers they had and i was wondering how do you know what are good ones and not so good ones.they dont know about hard drives either(the person that gave then to me)thanks.

bought a laptop with no built in cd drive so want to buy an external disc drive will i be able to copy music from my laptop to cd and what one would you rccomend me to get if this is possible.i want my laptopp to be able to work as any other laptop with a built in disc drive thank you for taking my question hope to hear back soon.

Hi,

I was wondering if you could give me some tips on how to avoid hard drive damage and cpu damage. How long can you turn on a PC for without it being damaged? Yesterday i kept my PC on standby for 9 hours, is that bad?

I put in the restore cd (and another copy as well) and for both copies it will either crash to a blue screen or it will be unable to copy individual files over. It never gets past the point where it is copying over files after I chose which drive to install it on. Would this be a problem with the ram perhaps? Please only respond if you "know" what your talking about. This is not a scratched cd issue. Thanks!!!

I left my computer on with some internet screens up all night the other night and when I restarted my computer the desktop and start menu where missing. I tried right clicking to check properties but when I right click nothing happens. the only thing I can do is press Ctrl, Alt, and Delete to bring up the window task manager. I cant find out any way to fix this. The only way I got on the internet is by going to New Task on the window task manager and typing in a website. Please help me. I can open certain programs by using New Task. but I cant get to Start Menu or Control Panel. Please Help!!

Drives are usually written in that window in black lettering. Mine has been in blue lettering for about 3 weeks now.

Thanks for the guidance on installing the OS - but here's the next question. Say I purchase a USB external Optical Drive - Will the system read it without an OS to set up the drivers for the external drive, etc? Or will that info be contained in the OS CD?

Compaq stated that the motherboard will only work with hard drive that is 5400 RPM. They also stated that I can upgrade anywhere up to 120 gigs. The connection is 20-Pins with IDE interface. I need someone to help me discover this online.

I've noticed that hard drives today are having much higher RPM. Can someone tell me if higher RPM will still work smoothly or not?

The computer is several years old, it can play games such as Unreal Tournament 2004 but it lags when the game screen gets busy and that is so annoying! Would a better Graphics card increase performance and if so which card should I get? I was thinking of getting one second hand as my PC is quite old.
