Hi,

I was wondering if you could give me some tips on how to avoid hard drive damage and cpu damage. How long can you turn on a PC for without it being damaged? Yesterday i kept my PC on standby for 9 hours, is that bad?

normally a hardrive, its electronics, the motor are the ones that fails, then you need to change it, it's made to witstand shocks & knocks, but its advisable not to shake or knock the hardrive while the power is on, the cpu generates alot of heat, so predoidic cleaning of the ventilation holes or vents to ensure that theres adequate airflow so tat the cpu does not gets overheated, i usually switch mine off, even if it's on standby it uses electricity

Mine has been on since last August ... never turned it off except to reboot.

So long as you have not overclocked the CPU or tampered with proper airflow ... there is no issue here.
You can turn it on & off as often as you like & for as long as you like.

Nowadays, it's more a power saving issue that a true factor in the longevity of your PC.
The monitor ( if CRT) is another story.

I think I have turned my current PC off two or three times in the four years I have had it.

mine work almost 24h/24h...since 3 months
- a good power supply block
- a rather effective ventilator
- periodic cleaning via an air compressor/souflor ( small size for pc exists)
for the software "kaspersky internet security 6.0" the best for me..!

Basically, until it breaks. This will vary with computer and environment. Underwater the time is generally much shorter.
