What you want is some sort of disk partition management tools (eg Paragon Hard Disk Manager or Ranish Partition Manager) and then you can use them for duplicating your 'c' drive onto the new disk surface, expand the partition on the new disk to suit the size you want it (ie all of the disk or maybe less if you plan a 'd' drive on it too). Paragon Hard Disk Manager is given away this month on the cover of the UK PC World magazine. Ranish Partition Manager is shareware I think.

This can be done by installing both disks into the one computer (eg your existing one as master and the new one as slave on the IDE bus)... then making the new one the master on the bus that the old one was on.

Otherwise... if you want to 'back up' that's a whole different ballgame... you need backup software and something to back up onto (typically a tape drive).

Your existing drive is your backup. Here's what I mean...

If you are installing a new hard drive then remove your existing drive and complete the install. When you're finished with the new install place your old drive in as a SLAVE and get your data from it.

When you're done, you can either format the drive and use it as extra storage, or remove it all together.

If the hard drive still works, you could probably buy a usb cable adapter to plug the hard drive into your computer. The computer will read it like any other hard drive when you plug it in.

these are good answers but the easiest and less time consuming is to just burn what you want to CD or DVD...
