RE new HDD and OS?

Thanks for the guidance on installing the OS - but here's the next question. Say I purchase a USB external Optical Drive - Will the system read it without an OS to set up the drivers for the external drive, etc? Or will that info be contained in the OS CD?

The system will most likely not read the drive before the computer boot into windows.

Most computers these days have support for USB keyboards and maybe flash drives but not many have support for USB hard drives.
