If you are only using it for Internet and Email, then you really do not need anything fancy.

A laptop with at least a 1Ghz processor and 512Mb of memory will work fine if it is running XP. You could get by with less memory if you were using Win2k.

You could get one like that for around $200-300

If that's all you're doing then any computer you buy *now* will be way more powerful than you need... so you could even buy second hand or end of line cheap computer.

As for desktop v laptop... ask yourself if the space you need to save & the amount you will move it justify paying between 50%-100% more for a laptop and justify a machine that cannot be upgraded and is a pig to fix if it goes wrong.

In the UK bottom end desktops will cost about £200 and bottom end laptops about £350... and will both do what you want out-of-the-box. Make sure you get a network or modem included to match whatever internet connection you're going for.

I usually recommend HP for casual computing. They can run from $700 (for a decent one) to thousands of dollars. You probably don't need to get any type of fancy graphics processing unit unless you plan on using it for gaming. That can save you some money. Preferably with 1 GB of ram (512 min) and 1.5Ghz+. That should work well and should run for around $600-$800 and should last several years. (possibly less if you find a sale or rebates.)

Thats basically what I use my laptop for..and I have a Toshiba Satellite. After researching for a couple months I finally bought it. I've heard nothing bad about Toshiba computers..so I think I made a good choice. I would suggest it anybody.
