I am going to assume you are talking about an "External" drive which would not have jumpers to set.

So, it shows up in "My Computer" but when you click on it, nothing happens?

I would venture a guess that it is either a bad driver or bad cable. That would be the only reason I could see an external drive showing up but not opening.

Try plugging the drive in with a different cable, also try a different USB port.

If that doesn't work, try installing the drive on a different computer to make sure that it is not a hardware issue with that drive.

If the recent SATA stress does not look in My laptop bypass to gadget supervisor (in my laptop's properties->hardware tab) then precise click on Disk Drives and choose test for hardware adjustments and homestead windows might desire to discover the recent hard stress.
