Compaq stated that the motherboard will only work with hard drive that is 5400 RPM. They also stated that I can upgrade anywhere up to 120 gigs. The connection is 20-Pins with IDE interface. I need someone to help me discover this online.

I've noticed that hard drives today are having much higher RPM. Can someone tell me if higher RPM will still work smoothly or not?

Thanks.

I've never heard of a PC not being able to use a 7200RPM hard drive. The hard disk's speed is internal & "mechanical" ... it's not a "logical" feature that requires compatablity.

As for the disk size limitation ... that is more credible. This would be due to BIOS limitations in older PCs that will not recognize hard drives over a certain capacity.

The rep at Compaq may have been looking at their own available upgrades for your PC when he said that a 7200 RPM would not work.
He probably did not see one (on his list) for that model PC which offered 120GB at 7200RPM.
He wanted to make a sale of what he had available.
