Okay, I may sound ignorant, but what exactly is a portable hard drive? Can they act like a normal hard drive? Do you run an OS on them? Can you install programs on them? How much are they? What's the difference between that and a flash drive?

First of all, I bought a laptop about a month ago. It was my first time buying a laptop so I read a lot of PC magazines before the purchase.
But there was one thing I failed to pay attention which is the size. Before the purchase, I have been using 17" desktop and for some reason it didn't seem that big.
Hence, I felt buying a 17" laptop was not a bad idea. Moreover, I prefer big screen so my eyes get less tired.
But after having used the laptop about a month, I started to notice about 90% of laptop users have 14" laptop. Certainly not bigger than 15.4."
I also started to realize my 17" laptop isn't that portable and doesn't fit into my bookbags. I would have to put it in big bag.
I think I made a huge error in judgment regarding size as I might have to carry it around a lot as a college student.
What do u guys think of my situation? What do you suggest I should do?

I have a Gateway Media Center PC that worked fine up until a few days ago. I turn it on and it's stuck in a permanent boot cycle, it goes up to the boot screen then restarts. I removed it from my computer ant tried to hook it up to another machine as an external drive, and I see the recovery d: folder and have full access to it, but when I try to access the e: drive, where all of the data is, I get the message "The files or directory is corrupt" and I have no access. I have about 300gb of data on it, how can I get access to it to get my info?

Look at getting a new laptop. (An XPS). The options are the onboard sounds, or an integrated SB Audigy. If I'm not going to be running external speakers (like, surround sound), just the ones that come in the notebook, is there any sense upgrading the onboard sound?

At my office we are setting up a beeper system for the shipping department. When a door bell is is pushed, it sends him a message on a beeper telling him where this happened. My boss also wants a way for when a page is printed in his HP laserjet 2430 to have it send him a page as well. Is there a way to have like an EIO adapter to output to a serial port or usb or something to plug into our paging system? Or is there a simple little button we could attach to the paper try that is light enough so when a page falls on it, it pushes the button?
