Look at getting a new laptop. (An XPS). The options are the onboard sounds, or an integrated SB Audigy. If I'm not going to be running external speakers (like, surround sound), just the ones that come in the notebook, is there any sense upgrading the onboard sound?

I was told that with the Dell upgrade, they don't actually change the sound card but that they insert a license key into the OS to make the sound card look like and SB Audigy.... Now I may be wrong, but why not call up Dell and ask them exactly what the upgrade involves and then decide if it is worth the extra money...

if youre not gonna use it to listen to music or watch DVD movies then no there is no reason to upgrade - integrated sound is pretty good these days. Maybe just invest in some nice headphones to listen to music / DVD.

the XPS has some good hardware in it - the quality difference from integrated to an Extigy is non-existent

I easily have a cheap SB Audigy card in my pc I picked up from Wal-mart, and it has extra appropriate high quality to my different computing gadget's equipped-in sound. i do not do not about computer sound playing cards, yet in case you may ick it up, bypass for it. i might want to study the way it impacts battery existence first.

Probably not, the speakers in laptops are not top quality so the upgraded sound card would probably not make any difference.
