I want to get into build my own computer from the components up, but don't know that much about it. What should I know? What could I do wrong causing expensive damage to motherboards and other equipment? What components are the best? Is it difficult, time consuming, etc.? How do you initially install an operating system, do you just put the windows disk in and turn it on? Is there anyway I can screw this up?

I have a 1999 Model Compaq Presario 5360 With 192Mb of Ram. For $37.99 I could nearly max out the RAM at 320MB with the max being 384MB. Keep in mind that the speed of the RAM is 100MHz and the processor in the computer is only 450MHz. Also keep in mind that the peak amount of RAM used, including virtual memory is around 256MB. Would I notice much of a proformance increase?
My Question is Would it be worth $37.99 to upgrade from this:

AMD K6-2 450MHz Upgrade to this----> OC AMD K6-2 500MHz
192MB RAM PC100 Upgrade to this----> 320MB RAM PC100
20GB HD Stay the same----> 20GB HD
8 MB video RAM Stay the same----> 8 MB video RAM

too bad his warranty doesn't cover spills. do you think i should pay for the repairs or get him a new macbook. What would be fair? His laptop turns on but the screen doesn't light up. And sometimes it won't turn on at all.

I have the option to get a TV Tuner for my PC, but I would have to loose the TV to do it. Is it worth it?

I am planning to use the TV Tuner, besides watching regular TV, is to use it to play Xbox 360 on my monitor, and the quality would greatly improve. My monitor is 19 inches LCD. My videocard setup (if that matters) is dual nVidia 7600s, and I do have available PCI slots. What really could bother me would be to watch TV. I usually tend to watch TV when I wait for something to be done on the computer, like compiling or rendering, anyone had similar experiences? So, what would be better?

my motherboard supports only agp 4x :(
but found 2 graphic cards that says it supports AGP 8x/4x :)
they both DDR SDRAM, so does it matter what type? like pc2100 pc2700? or do they support all ddr sdram motherboards?
im just was wondering if they both of these 2 cards will work
and what would be a better choice :)

I have 2 SATAII hard drives, but until now have had a motherboard only capable of SATA speeds (150mb). Having just got a new motherboard with SATAII capabilities I've connected the SATAII hard drives using the original SATA cables that came with the old motherboard.

I know there's a difference between the cables - the SATAII cables have clips on them, making them more secure, but is there actually a difference in speed? Or will I be getting full SATAII speeds from regular SATA cables?

This computer is fairly new. We got it last February. It is a Hewlet Packard (HP) and the monitor is a HP mx705 flat screen. Within the past month, the screen keeps having these quick blips that worry me that something is wrong. About every 10 minutes or so, (it is random), a line of white light will flash and move in a wave from the bottom of the screen to the middle of the screen. And the bottom half of the screen will then be black for a milisecond. This all happens super fast and comes along with a quick static sound. YIKES! What could this be and what do I need to do to fix it (is it something that needs to be fixed or will it go away????) I know NOTHING about computers!

its new, it has 2GB ram, 2.2Ghz Athlon 64x2 dual core processor 4600+, its supposed to work blazing fast, and it did for the first few hours and a day or two, but now it works slow. I deleted something called Otto in the add/remove programs, maybe thats why its slow; my computer starts up fast but it takes time to load the interface or sometimes open a folder.......
downloads speeds are 25-40kb/s but in the beginning it was 150-200+ kb/s easily....what wrong??

i dont wanna restore such a new computer, and if i did, would it be fast again, and will it install that Otto thing again?
Gimme advice plz

I am looking to buy a laptop soon. I notice on Dell's outlet store site for laptops that they list Intel Core 2 Duo processors with the following numbers: 1600, 1660, 1830, 1860, 2000, 2160, or 2330. I want to know what do these numbers mean exactly?

When I try to start my computer it goes to the Windows XP screen, then freezes there. I tried starting it in ever mode (safe mode etc.) and it ends up freezing at the same screen. The computer says it does not need a recovery disk, that it is already in the computer. Now I dont know how I can access it. Please help, I'm in college and cannot get by without my laptop. The model number is PCG V505EC

Thanks a lot!
