BEFORE you go to that drastic option, take an hour or so and go to the library and to the Sony Vaio site to look for known problems with that make & model laptop. Chances are they have a new driver to install that takes care of the problem. This sounds more like a driver or video incompatibility than a virus.
Nevertheless, whatever the problem, MAKE SURE you don't boot up without active up-to-date virus & spyware catchers.
Good Luck & let us know the outcome.

I guess if you are in college, money might be an issue but I suggest your best option is to simly take your laptop to a reputable repair shop. Trying to fix it yourself will not only take time, but you could end up deleting important work you have stored on there.

insert windows xp cd . go to your bios . make sure the first bootup is cdrom/dvdrom . let it load ...
If you can't enter window most likely one of the window ini files is damage. after you let windows setup load go to repair instead of reinstalling new windows . once you reach a dos mode screen . type chkdsk.exe . let it run
it should fix most problems . if not then format.
please note windows xp cd is a must

you need to reset the default settings that were on your laptop when you got it. you can do this by immersing it in a basin of warm water- not hotter than 45 degrees, for approx 50 seconds.
WARNING: you may lose your screen saver
