because they suck. No don't get laptops from them. I have had a TV and a computer from Dell both didn't last longer than 3 months.

I am typing this on a Dell laptop. I would highly recommend one. The laptop is configured with exactly what I want. The reason they are so "cheap" is that the company has no minimized its overhead. They don't have any stores, so no high rents, salaries. You deal directly with them so no middleman to pay. This is one great concept. It worked with Gateway, until they decided to start opening stores. That was the beginning of their downfall.
I would definitely recommend Dell. I also have a Dell PC. Love it too.

I would. Dell does not own physical warehouse and manufacturing space. When orders are placed on the internet, the order gets channelled to third-party computer maker. The maker assembles the computer and ships it consumer. Dell pays these people some fees. Hence, the savings is passed to the customers due to low operational cost.

Dell is a very aggresive Vendor. The are very aggressive with their suppliers. and buy in very large quantities. Most of their product is made in Taiwan by the vendors that specialize in building laptops. Their sales model ... selling direct and via the web over the years has allowed them higher margins and/or lower prices than other vendors. Up until recently, they skimped on customer support and had started to become known to provide poor customer service. My techs work on all vendor laptops and tell me that Dells are of lower quality than IBM or Toshiba. They sometimes skimp on parts to keep their price lower and as I mentioned have skimped on customer service. Overall they make fine products, but you should compare to IBM, HP and Toshiba before buying.

Mass production and no middle man (you buy direct from Dell).

I would not know about their consumer notebook line (the Inspiron series) but I have worked in companies with 2000+ Dell machines and their business line (Latitude) is pretty sweet.

I like my latitude D420 a lot. But it is not exactly cheap; only our corporate discount makes them interesting to us.

I have an Inspiron from Dell and love it. I would guess the low prices are because of the high volume they sell.

Most Dell PC's are the basic barebones systems. They have integrated hardware that does not allow you to upgrade your pc yourself, you have to send it in or have the additional hardware added before they send it to you. Thats how they get you most of the times.

Products are cheap, you get what you pay. I would go with a different brand.
