I want to get into build my own computer from the components up, but don't know that much about it. What should I know? What could I do wrong causing expensive damage to motherboards and other equipment? What components are the best? Is it difficult, time consuming, etc.? How do you initially install an operating system, do you just put the windows disk in and turn it on? Is there anyway I can screw this up?

There are many ways to mess this up. I am one of the people that actually do this in minimal clothing [if clothed at all], usually boxer shorts to help prevent static build up. That, along with an anti static wristband will help.

The basics are:
Touch no connectors at ANY time.
Be careful!
The memory [RAM] modules require up to 20-30 lbs of force to click into place.
make sure to get parts that will be compatable [check a compatability list].

Google 'pc building tips' and others along those lines, I find that the tutorials on howstuffworks.com, tigerdirect.com, and windowsdevcenter.com are great guides for beginners.

Go to your local library and find all the books you can on how to build your own computer. There are many good books on the subject. Pick out the one or two that explain things in terms that you can understand well and go with them. I would say that the most harmful thing that can happen while your building a computer is static discharge. That will ruin a lot of components in a hurry. So, make sure that you ground yourself BEFORE touching any components for the computer.

Buy good name-brand components. They will be more expensive, but in the long run you'll be glad you did. Beware of static electricity especially when handling the CPU and RAM.

Checkout some of the components that other manufacturers use. Look at Alienware computers, Dell's and figure out what brand of components they are using, then buy them yourself and put it all together.

Typically the OS will have a bootable disk so that you can load it on a fresh drive.
