Hardware - September 2006

I'm just building a desktop PC for myself, mainly to do my music work. But at some point a guy just wants to play his video games. What website can I go to to gat a decent video card that can handle the games listed below, but doesn't cost too much. My price range is between $80 and $150.

The Games

Black Hawk Down (the 1st one and the 2nd one)
Need For Speed (1, 2 & 3)
and any game similar to those.

I'm building a custom computer online and i ran into something odd. The website has the Nvidia Geforce 7900GTX (512mb) for $444 and the Nvidia Geforce 7950GT (512mb) for $290
.....and also the Nvidia Geforce 7950GX2 (1Gb) for $574. ...this one probably costing alot more cuz it has 1 gb mem..(not sure)

so my question is, why is the 7900gtx more costly than the newer 7950gt? and what do you recommend that i buy? is the newest 7950gx2 worth its money? -thanks.

I'm running a Pentium D 840 3.2GHz dual-core CPU in my system, and with the fan that came with it it was running extremely hot, like in the 80's celsius without doing much of anything. SO I got a new fan - a Zalman CNPS7700 all-copper cooler. I'm also using Artic Silver 5. With the fan on max speed, the CPU still gets very hot - with a load, it will rise into the 70's C and start to climb just over 80. I've tried remounting it several times, using different amounts of thermal compound, but still it runs hot. Any suggestions?? Please????

I have several large video files that are around 6 gigabytes and whenever I attempt to copy them from my internal hard drive to my external hard drive, it says the file is too large. I assume this is because I need more free memory. Is there a setting, like the page file, that I can temporarily boost up so that I can do the transfer?

So far, I have tried: 1.unplug power & USB cable/reconnect.2.re-install software. 3. Plug in Flash Drive while hard drive is disconnected/then add hard drive.. 4. Plug in 2 Flash Drives, then add hard drive. 5. Contacted manufacturer. 6. Updated USB driver for hard drive. Programs installed as F:\--- won't work, but used MyComputer and located various files (now called G:\file name). Files can be opened O.K. mp3 files will play. jpg photo files display O.K. How can I get my computer to recognize the USB drive as "F:\" again?.

I have some annoying programs that have attached themselves to my start menu. Whenever I start the computer there they are. I want them gone from the start menu....just not deleted from the computer. Some examples: QUICKTIME, AIM, IPOD and some music program. I do not even know how to tell what is in there.

How do I accomplish my mission? (In easy to follow steps, please!)

I have a new computer thats currently using a 40gig WDC drive. I've tried 3 new HDD. None have worked except this 40 gig one. The first one would even turn on i didn't even feel the disk turning. The 2nd one blew up on me and the third one i feel it get hot but its not spinning. with the third one i get something called nvidia boot check then it takes me to a black screen. All of the drives are WDC and only a 40 gig is working please help. My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-K8N Ultra-SLI.

I don't quite remember the make/and model to well but mine I belive was a Tandy model 1000...something. Anyway I had fun with it, it actually did have a GUI, so I learned how to type on it, the games I had I could never figure out how to install, but hey have to start somewhere right?

I have a computer that's about 7-8 years old, I changed the OS to XP a few years ago, but now everything else is totally outdated on it and in it. Would you suggest buying a new one, or upgrading the one I have. Have any guess estimates on prices? I want to completely bring the insides up to par.
