I have a computer that's about 7-8 years old, I changed the OS to XP a few years ago, but now everything else is totally outdated on it and in it. Would you suggest buying a new one, or upgrading the one I have. Have any guess estimates on prices? I want to completely bring the insides up to par.
Suggestions?
I'd appreciate anything on the subject you have to offer, thanks!

As your computer is so old I would start from scratch and build a new one as just about everything is obsolete. Choose your equipment carefully and make sure it will be compatible with Window$ Vi$ta if you will want to "upgrade" your OS.
If you really love the design of your case it is possible to gut it and replace everything; but most current equipment uses so much power and generates so much heat I have doubts a 7-8 year old case would provide adequate airflow. Depending on your case there are likely to be compatibility issues as well.

Here's an article detailing a recommended budget build: http://anandtech.com/guides/showdoc.aspx?i=2791&p=1 here's a value one: http://www.sharkyextreme.com/guides/MVGSBG/article.php/3607756 and here's one for a high end system: http://www.sharkyextreme.com/guides/MHGSBG/article.php/3618811

Be advised that since the Intel Core 2 Duo has been released prices for AMD CPUs have dropped dramatically offering great bang for the buck in the Athlon X2 systems.

Sounds like its time to replace. Wal Mart is a great place to start. They sell both complete systems and just the tower. E-machines are a great value, but somewhat tough to upgrade. Compact on the other hand can be totly upgradable and last far more then 10 years. The graphics and processor of the compact run new cool and quiet technology, meaning a processor speed starts min and adjust automatic for the computers health.

Most likely will be cheaper to replace than to upgrade. Sub-$500 is pretty easy to find (Dell, etc.). Also, what you need to buy will depend on your needs. If it's just web surfing, some word processing, and light gaming, most low to mid-range PCs (P4, don't bother with Celeron) should fit the bill. See techbargains.com to get an idea on pricing.

A computer is old at 2, it's ancient at 4 . It's compaired to a dinosaur at 6. Get a new one. You won't believe the difference in speed and what you can do.

i'd buy a new one.... check out acer, hp, dell, gateway if you want a computer thats pretty good and cheap.... and you don't have to do anything to it.... you can get something pretty good for about $800.... if you want something really good.... have someone build you a computer. www.tigerdirect.com and www.newegg.com offer cheap prices on parts... www.pricegrabber.com helps too ;)
