Possibly - depends on the exact model of the chip and motherboard. If the board has a socket 478 processor slot and the CPU is a socket 478 then you're PROBABLY ok - but even then, it depends on the model of the core of the CPU and what the board supports.

The Willemette core will not work in motherboards that use the Intel 865 chipset even though the chip and the socket match up - so the person who said yes, if the chip fits, is wrong. If the chip fits it will probably work, but you CANNOT say defnitively.

And yes, the chip has to have the same manufacturer - Intel for Pentium and Celeron and AMD for Athlon and their other models. But this really should be obvious - AMD and Intel use different CPU sockets.

Yes, in most cases you can. The 3.6 Ghz speed is the maximum speed that your motherboard will support. However make sure that the 2.8 Ghz cpu is compatible with the bus speed of the motherboard. Example; If the cpu has a Front Side Bus speed of 800 mb, and the motherboard has a fsb speed of only 533 mb, then it will not run. Check your motherboard manual, or download the specifications from the motherboard manufacturer. Good luck

Most likely yes!

Only thing you need to do is make sure that the motherboard is compatible with your processor.

you have to check if the processor is AMD or INTEL, make sure your motherboard can support. And also you got to check the pins your motherboard can support.

check the motherboard specs at the manufacturer website. intel.com, amd.com

See the difference in speeds, it may work, but it might be alot slower. Otherwise it won't work at all.
