If you want toys - Mac.
If you just use Office - Dell.

The Dell is more affordable because you can get a more stripped down system. Comparing similarly equiped laptops the prices are closer, though still in favor of the Dell.
I'm hearing that Dell quality has declined and more IT Managers are using HP/Compag. At Yahoo I'm seeing more HP/Compag laptops being deployed to new hires.
Application wise the Mac runs MS Office so you can easily swap document files with friends. In my opinion the Mac iLife suite is easier to use than similar Windows apps.
Each has their pros and cons, but fun factor tips in favor of the Mac. Also with the move to Intel processors you can run Windows on Macs.

That's like choosing the better of two evils.
Dells are better than Macs...but they still have their problems. And to be honest, their customer service sucks. I've owned 2 dells (still have them, they work fine, though the desktop is starting to have problems) but when i've had billing issues, Dell was absolutely no help. They would either tell me that basically it wasn't their problem or they'd tell me they were connecting me to somone else and msyeriously I'd get disconnected. This didn't happen just once, but many times.
For more choices, check out http://www.newegg.com . Definitely read through the customer reviews. You'll probably find a better computer, for a better price there than you would through Dell or Apple.

if you are going to spend about $1500 on a laptop get a macbook from www.apple.com or any place that sells them. But if you are on a budget, and you prefer dell, dont get one. they have problems with the hard drives crashing only after 3 months and the inspiron notebooks and slow. if you get a dell go with the pavilion, but a better chocie would be a toshiba satalite, i have had my toshiba for a week now and its definatly worth it.
i paid 70 dollars extra for a 3 year parts and labor warenty. definatly consider this when buying a laptop. you wouldnt want your investment costing $200 or $300 dollars more to fix when you can get an extended warranty for alot cheaper.
also get a laptop that is going to have alot of Ram at least 512 or 1 GB so that when vista for windows or lepard for apple comes out(new opperating systems) you will be able to run them. good luck!

Good question..I have recently heard that a lot of the colleges hand out programs for the class which are only windows compatible..in this respect you need a Dell my Dear
However it all depends what course you are doing...If
you intend on doing say Architecture a Mac would be ideal as they are more specifically geard for that..( I have two good friends who own Mac's..1 is an Architect and the other is a web designer and they both would not change for the world!)
For all practicality and not knowing your course I would say stay with the Dell...*sob sob*
Maybe next time...it wasn't ment to be : (

Stop The Madness! Go with the Mac. Easy to use... runs MS Office (and as a student you can get it for about $150), can swap files back and forth between Mac and PC, mitigated threats by viruses and other nasties, native support for iTunes, runs Photoshop CS a whole heck-of-a-lot better than a PC does. Need I say more?
