..... it keeps falling behind by an hour or so everyday - what could be causing this? Is this motherboard-related, or what do you think? ... Also, is there anything I can do on my own to remedy the problem? ... Thank you in advance for your help.

Thank You ALL - Everyone's answer seemed to either help me or else reconfirm/discard the other suggestions. Anyway, I am going to adopt the dummy proof approach (i.e. change the battery and if that didn't work look into the software angle.) … As for the problem at hand, of selecting the best answer, I'll leave that up to you guys - like I said, you all helped me so how can I just pick an answer at random! … My vote, however, goes to our older friend "who has been there and done that"! (lol) … Again, thanks everyone.

Try a new battery.

I think older computers had an actual battery inside for the clock that needs to be replaced from time to time. Or there could be a memory/processor/motherboard problem. It's a minor problem that can't be fixed with software, which means either you start replacing circuit boards or the computer repair shop does. Consider buying a new computer if yours is more than 4 years old.

The clock is a separate item on the mother board with its own battery. It may be broke, a bad battery, or you computer may be set to the wrong time zone, causing it to reset every time it does a clock matching download.

A small watch/calculator type battery inside your computer provides power for your clock. After about 3 years you need to replace it. Just remove a side panel (usually the leftside) and you can see it. There is only one such battery inside. You will need to re-set the clock after changing batteries. I changed one last week. Any local store should have the replacement, but take the old one to show a sales person. Many companies have different names for the same battery. Most stores have a cross-reference chart to show which one you need to buy.

One hour off per day is a lot!
You may have a hardware problem.
I have 2 programs that actually set my computer clock once a day, so it's always dead on. The one that sets it also has a female voice speak the time every hour on the hour. Atomic clock 7.0
The battery is probably not at fault, as it will quit totally before causing this big an error.

Either your CMOS battery is failing (in which case you can open your computer, find it and replace it for about 14-25 dollars or...

There is a component in your motherboard called a RTC (Real Time Clock) that is probably failing (they are notorius for it).

Not a big deal really. You can get software to correct it that will set your clock to the atomic clock at intervals. Google them and I found one called "ClockWatch", but I have never used it and will not vouch for it, but more googling will get you a freeware version, I am sure.

Sounds like you need a new battery. Make sure you have a professional do it, I believe you can lose some sensitive data if the switch isn't done in a timely maner.

your computer clock has a bios battery on the mother board. try changing that. it looks like a watch battery about the size of a quarter, you can get em anywhere that sells watch batteries.

If you keep resettin git and it always goes back you should change you power saver setting(standby mode) My computer did the same thing it is a dell and we figured out it would reset itself everytime it went into standby and had to log back on after a period of inactivity. Now we don;t use standby mode just the screen saver.

Could it be that you have it set to use Internet time to reset it everyday?

Right click on the time and choose Adjust Date/Time. Go to Internet time and deselect Automatically synchronize. Or maybe you could change the time zone location.

I had the same problem when I moved to a different time zone.
