Maintenance & Repairs - September 2007

My right front tire is making a screeching (shreiking ) sound ( as if 2 metals are making it ) when i turn the wheels ..
someone mentioned to me it could be the break pads?

i have to be honest here , i have been using the break pads pretty wildy ever since i bought it ( 3 months ago )
but do you think that's the problem , and if so can i change it for just one tire ( how much do you think it'll cost me , i am kinda tight now )
i am not sure if the warrantly will cover it , how would i find that out ?

Car has a kill switch, remote door opener,alarm, and remote starter. Remote starter nor working. Alarm wire is cut so it won't sound off. I took wire plug off alt., that didn't make a difference battery still went dead. Car starts as soon as the battery is charged. If you have any ideas where and how to find a short, be specific. Thanks!

There is like 1 service station by my house and I swear its true its changed its brand from like USA GAS, Shell, 76 and others like 20 times in like 2-3 years. Do stations oweners get some type of kick back for switching? I'm just curious becuase I've seen a few other ones do it but not as extreme as the one by my house. Do station owners get "incentives" to swich brands so often?

The battery, alt, and starter/solenoid all are good. Clicks once at solenoid when start attempt is made, then nothing. Want to know best possible route to go next - ignition? neutral safety switch? or relay? All access is tough in this one - don't want to chase ghosts. Also attempted neutral start - no luck.

I just bought a 97 dodge avenger for 1000, but it has some problems. When i first turn the car on white smoke starts to come out from little to alot. then when im driving around the city it smokes but not too much, in the highway it doesn't do it at all. What could be the problem? also, the seller, told me that i had to add oil like every 3 weeks. i dont know if there is an oil leak . i dont know whats going on?? is the oil and the whit smoke has to do with something i just find it weird to add new oil every 3 weeks. what could be wrong with my car?? also how much do you think all the repair is going to cost me...

Oh, i have a friend at my school that's taking Auto Tech3 and he said he thinks that it could be the head gasket .. oil going to the combustion chamber and producing the white smoke. he knows alot about cars, should i trust him and let him try to fix it? please give me an answer thanks.

This is a 460 big Block Ford from 1970. I thought it was a stuck lifter causing my pushrod to bend, but it is not, the intake valve is stuck (spring almost completey compressed). Any suggestions for freeing? I am tapping on the valve stem with a mallet, I am also trying to pry the spring up. I have it soaking in penetrating oil right now. Anyway of doing anything through the spark plug hole?

I went for an oil change about 10 days ago. My oil light came on and my car stalled. When I had it towed to the nearest auto station, they told me my car did not have a filiter. What went wrong? My engine was damaged and now it is sitting in the shop where I had the oil change done. They told me that their insurance company has to come and investigate. Are they at fault? How does a filter just "fall off"? HOw can I get this resolved? Are they responsible for repairng/getting me a new engine

I have 50,000 miles on my 05 Altima. The service manager and the manual say that the spark plugs do not need to be changed till 100,000 miles. Is it really true that they can last that long? Has anybody changed them before 100,000 miles?

so my question is when they say 'coolant' do they mean just plain water. It's a plastic container with MAX and MIN and it is below the min line. I think it's water it needs, if not then what is 'coolant'? Thanks

i recently replaced my serpentine belt and the sqiking noise didn't go away i have later found it's not tighten enough though the tightner is supose to be automatic. how can i tighten it manualy?

I just bought a new 2008 Ford Escape, and whenever the air conditioner is on it makes a gurgling noise. It only gurgles when in idle, or going slow speeds. Does anyone know what could be causing this? I'd like to have an idea to go to the dealership with since they seem to be idiots and will probably tell me nothings wrong. Thanks

It is used for a work van and otherwise runs great. Have replaced the fuel pump and filter but it still does the same thing. Can use it around town with no problem but if I go any distance it will begin to stall. If I wait 10 or 15 minutes it will start up again. When the problem occurs the tacometer will lay flat when I try to start it. After a few minutes, when I try to start it the tac will start to jump and will start. What could be the problem? Could it be a switch or sensor. What is the most likely cause and could you elaborate? Thanks.

fuses good, bulbs good, if i move the head light switch inbetween parking and head lights the dash lights and rear parking lights and license lights work but the head lights don't.

There is a sign in the office at my mechanic. It say we charge $72 an hour for labor, if we use your parts we charge $125 an hour.

Is this normal? Because it certainly does not seem fair.
