6 months is fine, truely.
the only people that recommend 3000 mile oil changes are the people selling oil changes
even the manufacturers dont recommend that and if thier cars dont last, you wont buy another so it in thier best interest to make them last.
I change oil every 5000 miles and between my 4 cars I have over 7000,000 miles total and NEVER had an engine problem
changing oil more often just causes more problems of oil disposal and is not good for the environment, even if it is re-cycled, why use more than you need.

I change the oil in my car twice a year, more if I'm driving a bunch. At 3,000 miles my oil hasn't even changed color yet. Unless you drive a ton of miles you can get by with an oil change every 6 months, but I do recommend using quality engine oil.

for you I would not recommend going by mileage. I would change it 2 times a year. Once before winter like maybe october. Then change it again in about march. In the middle of the changes have the fluids and tires checked out once or twice between oil changes. i own and operate 3 pennzoil oil changes and that seems to work very well for my customers that dont put many miles on their cars. Also it is part of the full service at my shops that you are entitled to free fluid, tire and whatever else you need checked in between oil changes.

3 to 6 months or when you feel guilty
My Saturn has a light that comes on when it wants the oil changed. I wait for the light.
My hotrod I change every six months, unless I take a trip over 2000 miles, then I change when I get home.

Neither. Check your owners manual and stick to their recommended procedure. While there's certainly nothing wrong with changing the oil every three thousand miles it is a total waste of money unless you drive a taxi or haul mobile homes up mountians daily. Normal driving doesn't breakdown modern oils like in the 'old' days.

Are they hard miles? (Stop and go in the city, street racing, green light lead foot)
If not, then go 4500 miles. Oil doesn't really need to be changed by "time" as much as mileage or more accurately hours of heavy operation.
The reason we use mileage as an indicator on cars is because usually we are moving forward when in our cars. These days (at least where I live) that's not allways the case, and needs to be considered. Still 3000 miles is a CONSERVATIVE schedule. The type of oil you use is also a factor, but everything is secondary to how you use your engine.

Change it every 3000 or every 3 months, whichever comes first. The reason every 3 months is cause oil gets contaminated from condensation that builds up inside the motor from sitting.
Cheap insurance - Change the oil!

i constantly exchange my oil at 3000 miles except i'm driving in give up and pass site visitors the place this is extra stable on the engine. With guy made oil you ought to run 5000 miles then in basic terms exchange the filter out upload oil to easily complete mark, at 10,000 miles i might exchange oil and filter out. that's in step with driving situations ans complete guy made oil.
