does it bolt up? pullys in line....plug?

No its not the same, The belt won't line up, the wires are different and the 87 Pontiac has a metric width belt. Alternators for a 76 nova are dirt cheap go to auto zone and buy one.

Have them cross reference it at an auto parts store and see if it matches.

As long as the bolts are in the same place on the housing and it mounts to the older steel brackets and the pulley for the v-belt is the the same, it will work. I doubt it will fit properly.

If you modify it. Does your nova have an internal voltage regulator? You will probably have to switch the terminals because the plugs are likely different. Just get one from the auto parts store. Chevy alternators are like $40.
