Maintenance & Repairs - August 2007

I have already priced the parts. The 3:73 gears are on sale for about $250.00 and the Posi is about $400.00 to $450.00. So, if i buy the parts and take both parts and truck to a shop. How much should I estimate paying? I have nowhere to do the work myself so I'm forced to use speed shops. I have contacted a VERY reputable garage in my area and he charges $80.00 an hour. Is that a fair price and how much time should I estimate him taking?

I have changed plugs with no difference. It has backfired lightly a couple of times. I have dual exhaust and I seem to be hearing it from the right side(maybe just my imagination) It doesn't seem to miss under heavy acceleration, but jerks the whole car under light acceleration at low rpm. At constant speed or idle, it seems ok. Any clues???

Ok, so I am a stuipd female and my husband is in the hospital! My car died last night. It started fine when I left work, I turned my car off when I got home, then 10 minutes later it would not start. We tried to jump it, but it wouldn't turn over, it tried but just wouldn't start. As soon as we took off the jumper cables, the lights worked but the car wouldn't even try to start. Does this sound like just the battery to anyone? Why would it die so quickly? Wouldn't I have had trouble before the battery totally died?

could it be the thermostat, And the ac works but the fan doesn't come on could the thermostat just make the fan not work at all until its replaced? And the car over heats, Any suggestions

I have a 2002 Chevy Prism and when i go over 60mph the car seems to be vibrating/shaking, not violently, but i can feel it though. what would the cause for this be? Thanks for your input.

I have a 2002 Ford Escape and for about three days last week it would not start properly. In the morning it took about five tries to start it. It also took many tries in the afternoon after work. It doesn't make a clicking sound, it just sounds like it wants to start but it won't. My battery is fine and I've been told it's not the starter or spark plugs. If I try to start it after driving it a couple of hours before it will be fine. I put fuel injector cleaner in it last week and it was fine that whole time. Yesterday it started messing up again.

I dont have the money to pay someone and I cant afford to bust out a window. my car does have t-tops so if i can get the window down about 2 inches I could take a t-top off to get inside. I tried the coat hanger thing but cant get it to work, is their some sorta trick to it? please help!!!

My car was rained in 7 days ago. The next morning, I used a shop vac to soak up the standing water. I left my windows down and moonroof open with my car in the garage to allow it to air dry. My car smells as if there is something rotten inside. And last night, I noticed some mold growing on the back carpet which I cleaned out.

I have used an entire bottle of Febreze. I've sprinkled "Carpet Fresh" on my floorboard. I left this overnight then vacuumed it out. The odor is still very strong.

Please help!!

Do you think a CVT transmission is good or even better than a regular automatic transmission? Are they harder to modify/ "hook up" than a regular transmission?

Ok. So I drove about 200 miles to cedar pointe and back in an 93 grand am with 168k miles on it. I got about 5 miles away from cedar pointe and a low coolant light came on. So i filled it with coolant and the light stayed on. But it stoped overheating. On the wayt back i had to keep fillling with coolant to stop with from over heating. I took it to the shop and a gasket blown and now the car won't even turn on because the water is mixing with the oil anbd making it really milky like.The coolant was leaking out through the head gasket. THe car won't turn on but I recently just bought new struts serepentine belt and alternator so there is some new stuff in the car. DO you think i could sell this car to anyone ? Ask if you want more details

The car is a 2004 chrysler pacifica, so yes fuel injected. Is the synthetic oil worth it? I live in michigan so winters can get quite cold even into negative temps, and over 100 in summer.

I took a bulb in the tail light compartment out but don't know if it's the right one to replace, I have taken out the bulb with the label on it: 12V W5W E1... is this the correct one to replace since my brake light is out?

I want to know how the energy from the piston turns the crankshaft. The connecting rod is not directly connected to the crank, there is a gap of a few 1000ths filled with oil. So why doesn't the rod just slip uselessly on the crank? Wouldn't a direct connection instead of the slipping connection produce more power?

I went into Pep Boys to get my front rotors and brake pads replaced. (the rear brakes were done about a year before by a different company) They told me they also adjusted the rear wheels. After driving a mile or so I always smell smoke coming from the left rear wheel. None of the other wheels smell like smoke. This problem wasn't happening before I visited Pep Boys.

What could it be? The mechanic I called said it was normal and to just drive it awhile. I got ceramic brakes for the front by the way. Could the mechanic have sabotaged me so I'd have to pay them more later? All that cost me $220. Can't afford much more.

My van's a 2000 dodge caravan. Please help. Thank you.

Ok im looking at this car its seem alright except it doesnt go into 2nd gear..when he says that does that mean reverse or the #2 that on the gear thing..lol..i know this may be a stupid question but i dont know much about cars....heres the car descrtion Second gear does not work. The car shifts from first to third then to over drive. Also the air does not blow cold and the driver door dose not lock..does that seem ok exexct the lock part?? what you think..will it still run?

Recently got four new tires and just noticed that the tread pattern on the driver side sort of points forward while the tread pattern on the passenger side seems to point backward. I looked closely at the tires and saw the word "outside" on all four tires, so I assume they were mounted correctly.

Do some tires with "directional" treads come in both driver side and passenger side models?

Asking here before I call the tire place - if I'm right that something's wrong, I'd rather know before I call them.

Ok, so my car (a 1999 Ford Mustang with 140K miles) started acting funny yesterday and the battery light came on. Eventually, it died. I had the battery and alternator replaced. A little later in the day I drove the car and now the idle is very low (less than 500 RPM). In fact, it even killed on me as I parked the car and when I had to make a slow turn. However, both times it killed I was able to start it back up easily. I called the "shade-tree mechanic" who I let fix it and he says the car's computer needs to be reset. What do you all think? Thanks in advance.

my cd player and cigar lighter are working fine know, it was a blown fuse, i replaced it

but do i need the 3 things that came out of the lighters socket, 2 of them are circle, 1 is black and the other is silver

the third is a kind of straight circular silver thing, are these 3 things important

Specifically an Oldmobile Rocket 98 from 1952 or a '69 Chevy Impala. I've recently become obsessed with old cars and (Of course) my mother told me to figure out how much it would cost to maintain a classic. So...it'd be fantastic to know how much that'd cost!
