I have changed plugs with no difference. It has backfired lightly a couple of times. I have dual exhaust and I seem to be hearing it from the right side(maybe just my imagination) It doesn't seem to miss under heavy acceleration, but jerks the whole car under light acceleration at low rpm. At constant speed or idle, it seems ok. Any clues???

computer diagnostics say misfire in cyl 1.. have replaced wires also and still no help??

Check and make sure all the distributor wires to the plugs are IN THE RIGHT ORDER!!

I had exactly the same symptoms after I had my car serviced and ( after drivng from San Diego to Salinas !) found out at a garage the $%#^@ mechanic hadn't re-connected the plug wires in the correct order.

If the plugs fire out of order, you'll get the "coughing" and backfiring.

It sounds like there could be a bad coil pack, or bad fuel injector on the # 1 cylinder. Because you said that you have already change the plug and plug wires. The way to check your plug wires is to raise your hood at night and look around the plug wires to see if you can see fire jumping from the wires while someone is giving it some gas. Hope this is helpful.

One general antidote to skips is better fuel. The areas of
New York, central east, Southern midwest Texas, and Farwest
Nevada, Arizona, and California have a lower fuel mix and it is
very critical to add some dry gas. Yet this is for random auto
usage that is due to the operator. A complete diagnostic at
a ford center will help you, oldsmobile will do it if you want a
top repair consideration.

Check or replace the plug wires. As they age they become brittle, and when you changes the plugs one of the wires could be damaged ( inside).

this could be several things .check the rotor arm inside the distributor also check for any signs of tracking in between segments inthe distributor cap.replace if suspect.plug leads may be shot. check coil and condensors .

I think that the timing is off and the distributor needs adjusting.

If none of the other suggestions is the problem, consider the throttle postion sensor.

If it's missing or backfiring then it is out of time trust me I am a mchanic.

sounds like wires need to be replace they are probably breaking down.
