Old tired battery could cause the alternator to work to hard. The alternator takes about 4 hp to run and making electricity makes heat. Running bad that car was known for plug wire problems. Watch the wires in the dark near the metal parts. Lot's of cars have there wires not clipped down in the factory original wire holders causing plug wires to arc to ground.

Start the car and remove the negative cable from the battery.
Is the car still running? If not the alternator could be wired up wrong. The car should run off the alternator not the battery.

I would think that the alternator is working overtime to charge the battery. Have you checked the battery? Possibly there is a defect in the battery or a short in the wiring.

sounds like you could have a bad short in your system somewhere. this may sound like a weird question, but have you replaced your gas tank lately? if not, don't worry. if you did, check for a shorted wire to the fuel pump. we ruined 3 new alternators before we found it.
