Alloy wheels are lighter than conventional wheel covers. They don't erode. They improve braking by distributing heat. And Of course they are more Stylish.

They're lighter. Every kind of performance is improved by reducing weight, and that's why they aluminum intake manifolds are so common, for instance. With wheels, though, there's a bonus. Anything that reduces unsprung weight improves the way a car performs on rough roads.. Momentum of the unsprung weight tends to make wheels leave the ground going over bumps and such.
Anything that reduces rotating weight will also reduce the amount of energy you are investing in acceleration. So that would improve acceleration performance.
So those are the real rational reasons that alloy wheels were invented.

Slightly lighter and look better, they also don't rust like steel wheels do or chip like chrome wheels do (they can still chip but not as bad). I would take alloys over crhome or a steel wheel anytime.

Reduction of "unsprung mass" versus steel wheels is the biggest advantage which helps improve the suspension response to bumps, braking and acceleration....another result of racing knowledge trickling down to standard cars. Resistance to corrosion and looks are some other important considerations.

lighter than the old steel rims meaning less weight to car meaning cheaper to produce and better on mpg.
