this is in response to answers i received prior, would i risk messing up the motor if i put an after market terminal on it?...i want to replace the whole wire but i think it would take just way too long, and i think just replacing the head would suffice just fine, is it possible the car would act normal when i replace it, would i risk any long term effects, im not bad with wiring so i dont think i would risk fire, i just wanna make sure that replacing the head would infact act just as if i replaced the whole wire....?

I got the van back to the garage were i stripped the head to find all the valves were bent. I therefor got a new set off valves ground them in, put a new gasket on and built it all back together with a new timing belt kit. I turned the engine by hand and all seemed fine. I then built it to the stage were i could run it only to find to knocking really badly!! I have done this process three times now with the same outcome everytime. I have put a thicker gasket on it shims cheked all my clerances and all seems fine apart from this hurrendis knocking. I have been asured that it is the correct type of valves for the van.
Any suggestions would be a great help.

i have to replace the positive side but i dont want to remove the whole wire, and tried to uncrimp the factory housing where the wires meet up at the positive side, but it would not come undone, is there an easy way to uncrimp the factory housing...can i just cut off the terminal and start over?... if so will there be enough wire to reach the terminal?

I have a 2DR 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix. I have had problems with my driver side window only working every now and then. It seems that if I let it sit for a bit, it will go up partially and then stop. It seems that the motor is getting warm and shutting itself off. I know that the rubber guides are somewhat sticky, especially in the summer, and seem to really make my windows go up slow. I tried lubricating them last summer with graphite lubricant. I worked somewhat poorly and the problem is back. I'm not sure if I can get by with better lubrication on the rubber or if I should replace my motor. If I need to replace, my motor, can I just replace the motor or should I replace the entire window regulator and motor??

i ran out of oil in mar car, i know i should have checked more often but didnt, it has started to sound like a diesel. im pretty sure that the mains and connecting rods are toast. if i change the oil for thicker stuff, such as 20w50, something like that, should it create more pressure and in turn float the bearings more and get rid if the sound. all i want to do is to make it quiet and trade it.

I own a 95 Honda Civic, lately my brake pedal has gotten soft (what i mean is that it sinks, after i apply brakes) it is not a regular occurence but lately it is more frequent. i apply the brake and it sinks slowly, making the car move up a bit, there is no problems with my brakes or rotors i got those checked, and there is no shake while applying the brakes, so no warping of the rotor, the brakje just sinks and gets soft, what can it be, there is no sound attached to it, there is an occasional screech but it happens as applying and it doesnt always lead to the brake sinking. can someone help give a clue as to where to look?

I have a 2000 Ford Ranger that I have had since 2001 and ever since 2002 my check engine light is always on. Their has never been a problem with the engine though. I have had the truck taken in to have that light removed but once i leave the mechanics place, the light comes back on within a few hours but again their is nothing wrong with it. I am thinking of fixing my truck up and getting it ready to sell but i want to make sure that light is gone once and for all. I hope somebody has a simple solution to this little problem.

Do Pinto belt driven camshaft timing gears wear out. I need both a crankshaft gear and a camshaft gear and I need to know if the actual gears wear out. They have some surface rust on them. I will be buying a new belt to go with them.

I was driving when i noticed a funny smell i assumed that it was from the tires or maybe just the ocean. The fallowing day the smell got worse i found it coming from the trunk, i then opened it and realized that smoke was coming out of my battery as if it where a muffler. Keep in mind that my battery is in the trunk (92 BMW). I turned the car off once i got home a bit of smoke still came out. I worried that i might have breathed the smell to long but i feel fine. Could there be a reason why this happened i purchased this Energizer battery 2 months ago. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I rear ended somebody yesterday, pretty hard, however my car ran fine afterwards. When I hit them, I pulled over, and turned the car off. Then I started it and went to work. Then after work it started fine and I got home. While at home I messed with the grill, headlight, bumber, battery placement, radiator placement to kinda get things looking okayl. Then I fired the car back up and it was fine. So I turned it off locked it up. Went inside, now for school today, I go to fire it up and it does then it turns off. It will fire every time. but then turn off. I dont get it. I am going to change the little fuel filter right now and see if it helps. I imagine the car is getting gas, because it responds to the pedal, but why wont it stay running? Any answers would be helpful. thanks.

ok ill try to be accurate as possible: i have a 1984 ford f-150 351 winsor 5.8 2bbl with about 93k miles or so i bought it at a used car auction and since got it and kept it running max 2 months at a time before something breaks. i have replaced the starter, solenoid switch, the ignition module(fender well mounted), along with ground wires and other odds and ends. but once again it has stopped i try to start it and only hear the click like the voltage is stopping at the solenoid and i rechecked the wiring as well as making a larger ground wire to ensure it was large enough to hold the voltage capacity coming from the battery. so is there a possibility that the ground is to large? or anything with this particular truck model/year that has problems? i have bypasses the solenoid with a pair of pliers and with some gas it starts fine so i know it runs just cant get it started without bypassing it. any thoughts or answers would be awesome.

we have a vauxhall astra diesel cdti plate 53 and more or less since we have had it from new we have had to top up the radiator once every fortnight or so.
the garage where it is serviced cannot find any signs of a leak even though we have mentioned it on several occasions when it has gone through its annual service.
what we are concerned about is where is the water going?
a mechanic who we know well mentioned something about a head gasket. if that goes i know we are in trouble but the car goes well and theres no white smoke emitted from the radiator area.
what do you think could be the problem
the only thing i can think of (being no mechanic in any sense of the word) is a leaky radiator or the water pump not working.
any help most appreciated

Quite often, people inquire as how to "clear check engine light".

Most of the answers are simply to disconnect the battery for a period of time. (myself included)

So, my questions are:

1) What causes a "check engine" light to come on?
2) Do some come on after a certain point in time, or mileage as a reminder to have the engine serviced.
3) If, someone simply wants to reset the computer themselves, why is it wrong to advise them to do so?
4) If you had a check engine light come on if you simply had an engine misfire because of some water in the fuel, will the check engine light turn off by it's self?
My thought is, if it were the friendly reminder type, it should remain off. However, if it reappears, then you should have the computer codes checked for possible causes.

Now for "flashing" check engine light.
I understand that means there is a dangerous condition in the engine that needs imediate attention. (right?)

There is this really, really old car that I want...I am okay if the body has some rust on it and cosmetic type problems...I just want it to be reliable...of course I want it to be restored, but I could only afford to do little bits at a time. Is this doable, or should I just wait until I have enough money to do it all at once?

When I get her towed, she's not running and out of gas, to the shop what are the list of things I should have the mechanic look at first? Before she sat, she had new brakes, and a tune up. I know for sure I'll need 4 new tires, battery, and the system flushed. What else should I tell them to check? I don't want to get ripped off
