factory recommendations on oils are set for best gas mileage and least wear on the engine. Although it would be fine to use the 10w40 it would not be the best oil to use. Check the oil every 1000 miles for a while and see how much it is using. Most oil burning happens when you first start it up. The valve guides get worn out and you burn the residual oil left on the cylinder head. Using a 10w30 would help a little with that since the oil at start up would be a 10 weight and not a 5 weight. But you also cause more friction and your engine works a little harder with a heavier oil. with 300k miles the truck has more than paid for itself so what do you have to lose if you think you need 10w40 then go for it. I would either keep using 5w30 or go with 10w30 and not 10w40 but that is just my opinion.

AWWW heck the factory always "calls" for something.Usually its so you go ahead and buy the name brand they recommend(like their own). This 5w-30 recommendation is only used as a guideline. You can use any good name brand oil you want.10w-40 is just fine and you can also use 10w30 incolder conditions. When a factory usually "calls" for something its usually just meant as a guideline so you know what parts to get.If you notice when a factory"calls" for something, its usually their own name brand product!?!? Aint that weird??

With that kind of mileage, use 10w40 since the internal parts are very old and worn down and you need thicker oil to lubricate those parts.

Yes but unless it is leaking the heavier oil will only cost you some gas mileage.
