Maintenance & Repairs - February 2007

My husband had a single auto accident last weekend. He hit a patch of ice on the highway and it caused the truck to "fishtail". He was told by the state highway patrollman that he overcompensated for the fishtail, causing him to loose control. It ended up going into the ditch and rolling 1 3/4 times! We went to look at the Sport Trac a few days ago and there are "gaps" all over the structure of the truck, nothing is alligned. We have to moreso pry the front doors open and then give them a hard slam to be sure they're shut completely. When we opened the door to the gas tank, that was even off center by about a half inch! There is major damage mostly to the front fenders, the hood, headlights are busted, windshield is cracked all throughout, the roof of the cab is bent down about 2-3 inches, mostly above the drivers side area. Body damage alone is est @ $9,400. How do we know if the frame is twisted? What is taken into consideration when calling a vehicle totaled? Any recommendations?

This is a follow-up to a question I posted earlier today. To sum it up, 38 hours ago my car had its 60k mile maintenance, a new water pump installed, and a new S-Belt installed. The car has been driven at least 50 miles and started/stopped at least 8 times. When I started the car on my way home tonight, I heard one of the belts screech for a split second (I am positive it was a belt). Everything was fine on the 20-min. drive home, until I was pulling in to the garage and a burning smell came through the vents. The engine may have been smoking but it was a cold night so it could have been mist. When the engine cooled enough for me to pop the hood, I checked the new belt. It looks fine and feels tight. I checked the ground and saw tiny, fresh puddles of light to medium brown, odorless fluid which I wiped up with a napkin. The same fluid appears to be collecting in part of the undercarriage under the S-Belt. Something is obviously leaking.

Thanks for all the help today, I'm just not quite following how to do this. Also, my belt came off and I cannot find a diagram. Does anyone know where there would be one online that would tell me how to belt it properly? Thank you.

I mean, there is valvoline instant oil change, mavis discount tires...etc.

Why doesn't someone start a huge new company with hundreds of franchised locations across the country. They should be open 7 days a week, 8am-8pm, and they should have very competitive prices.

Am I missing something here? Or did I just have the best idea ever?

Everything seems to spin freely except the one that goes straight into the engine. It is the biggest one. Is that one not suppose to? Also, how do you loosen the tensor? Thank you.

A squeak has developed over the last couple of months. It's only heard when turning to the right. It's a rotational noise. The mechanic is convinced it's squeaky breaks due to the heat & humidity. He said he could not see anything wrong when it was up on the hoist and it will probably go away when the weather cools down in a couple of months.

The car is a 1999 Ford Falcon AU and has just had the lower all joints replaced (squeaking before this event and continuing after).

I just recently put two new tires on my Dodge Durangeo when the tread wasn't worn. I had a nail stuck in one tire and the man said it was beyoned repair- I needed to replace it instead. He suggested putting a matching tire on to allow the tread to wear evenly. Was I a sucker or was this a legitimate sale? Also, how do protect my tires from cracking? Thanks in advance.

Have done what manual says to do, but still won't come out. Seems to be hanging on something? Have two motors and BOTH act the same way when trying to remove Cam/Gear. Manual says it should slide right out of block. Cannot remove front mounting plate because gear blocks the bolts that hold it on.

Anyone familiar to this problem let me know. Reasonable answers to a simple problem. Do not want to destroy gear! Puller does not work! This part MUST be bench pressed out.

Other than the standard "were as good as men at absolutely everything" hollywood thing, in my years as a mechanic I never saw or heard of even one single female tech. 2 were in my 6 month pre-apprentiship program and both withdrew midterm.

That a budding home mechanic could cut his teeth on? I'm looking for something that I can learn with, like the difference between a gear stick and an air filter (I literally am almost that bad).

Friends have recommended a mini, beetle, 2cv, 126, metro, AX or an old polo- any ideas?

Thanks!

First of all, thanks for all your help recently. Anyway, hopefully you can help me with this too. I recently just purchased a used Toyota Camry 97 LE car and it's making some clicking sounds on the inside the engine head when I step on the gass. The heavier I step on the gas the faster the clicking sound. I took it to 2 gas-station car-fixing shops and both technicians thought that the valve lifters needed to be replaced but they weren't exactly sure. I then took it to a dealer and the service advisor (not a technician, he's the person who schedules appointments for technicians) and he said he never had to replace the valve lifters on a Toyota before, and that he had been there a few years already. He said if anything, it should be that the valve needed an adjustment. He wanted $120 just to diagnose it. These things are expensive so I was trying to avoid having to pay $120 just for diagnostic. Do you happen to know what this problem could be? Please help. I appreciate it.
