If you open the hood, there will be a thing marked transmission fluid. Pull it out, wipe it off, stick it back in, then pull it out again. There is usually a line that says full on it, and if the fluid didn't go to that line, then it needs fluid.

Typically it doesn't shift right in one way or another. If you have a transmission dipstick (usually red handle to match color of transmission fluid), then after a 30 minute drive, park the car with the parking brake on and the engine idling. Open the hood and remove the dipstick (not the yellow engine oil dipstick). Dry the end of the dipstick with a paper towel and reinsert it all the way into the transmission again. Now remove it one more time to check the fluid level. Refer to your owner's manual, but any reading between the "fill" and "full" lines is ok.

If your car has an automatic transmission, You can check it by pulling the dipstick. The car needs to be running & in park. The car needs to be on level ground.
If you have to add fluid, do it while car is running and in park.

Do what I do..not worry about it..have your oil checked and changed regularily..and not by mileage, but every 3 months. A good shop will be checking all your fluids and will replace them or tell you there is a problem for you to have checked. Let the Men worry about it..you just keep drivin' them mad!

Ususlly it will be shifting differently, slower or slipping. Do not drive like this as this will do damage to the trans and become more expensive.
