This is a follow-up to a question I posted earlier today. To sum it up, 38 hours ago my car had its 60k mile maintenance, a new water pump installed, and a new S-Belt installed. The car has been driven at least 50 miles and started/stopped at least 8 times. When I started the car on my way home tonight, I heard one of the belts screech for a split second (I am positive it was a belt). Everything was fine on the 20-min. drive home, until I was pulling in to the garage and a burning smell came through the vents. The engine may have been smoking but it was a cold night so it could have been mist. When the engine cooled enough for me to pop the hood, I checked the new belt. It looks fine and feels tight. I checked the ground and saw tiny, fresh puddles of light to medium brown, odorless fluid which I wiped up with a napkin. The same fluid appears to be collecting in part of the undercarriage under the S-Belt. Something is obviously leaking.

The same fluid appears to be collecting in part of the undercarriage under the S-Belt. Something is obviously leaking. I think it looks like fresh oil. I took pictures from above and below. Please let me know your thoughts. http://community.webshots.com/album/557855542kjVRBa. Of course, this just had to happen on a Sunday, when the auto repair shop is CLOSED!

The leak is probably connected to the water pump installation. If it was me, I'd go to your car dealer and ask them to diagnose the leak and where it's coming from. Tell them you just had a new water pump installed by another shop. If they say the leak is from a faulty water pump installation, then take the car back to the shop that installed the water pump for warranty work. You have typically 90 days or 4,000 miles to get the car back there, but don't wait if the dealer says the pump has to be redone. Knowing what's wrong before you go back for the warranty work will be a powerful argument for them to fix it. Most shops respect a dealer's opinion.

Call the shop first thing on Monday and tell them that your car has a major problem and you cannot drive it. Tell them that they left something out or didn't get something back together correctly. Offer them a choice of them looking at it or you calling another shop. Don't let them charge you for fixing it. If your car did not have any leaks or problems before hand, then they are liable. Don't tell them about the belt squeak....it probably got saturated with oil. Hard telling how much oil you lost. Don't drive it. I'm just guessing that maybe the oil filter didn't get screwed on all the way.....good luck. If you have troubles....call an attorney.

The burning smell could be the fresh S belt. If the suspected oil leak is that small . I would not worry about it. Drive the car as you would any other day. The shop who worked on it will still be liable for anything done wrong. Whether it be oil,or water from the water pump install.
