The crap on the battery is most likely corrision, this build up of corrision can reduce the flow of electricity. Avoid touching the stuff with your bare hands or getting on your clothes or skin. It can be easily cleaned by disconecting the battery terminals, and cleaning them with a baking soda & water mixture. You wish to use caution when doing these because water conducts electricity only use enough to clean one pole at a time and make sure you have enough room to safely work, this is somewhat difficult with most cars these days. After you clean the terminals and the matching battery cable conectors use a wire brush or a battery terminal cleaner to again clean the terminals and connector so that a good solid connection can be reestablished when reconnecting them.
If this appears to exceed your capabilities then talk to a local garages or mechanic.

Get a wire brush and clean off the battery terminals, you might want to remove the terminals from the battery, clean them, put them back on and your done.... no need to bore you with 8 paragraphs of bs like everyone else is.

You need to have your battery cables removed, cleaned, reinstalled and retightened. But if your battery is 5 years old, you should replace the battery now with a new battery. That will save you trouble later.

your starter probably went, the stuff on your battery posts is corrosion, it's normal if your car is a little older, take it to a shop, or get a friend that knows cars to have a look at it for you.
