I just recently put two new tires on my Dodge Durangeo when the tread wasn't worn. I had a nail stuck in one tire and the man said it was beyoned repair- I needed to replace it instead. He suggested putting a matching tire on to allow the tread to wear evenly. Was I a sucker or was this a legitimate sale? Also, how do protect my tires from cracking? Thanks in advance.

Instead of some of the dumb answers above how about you hear from someone who actually works in the tire industry and knows what he is talking about?

If the nail was located in the shoulder or sidewall or if the inner-liner of the tire sustained heat damage from being driven on under-inflated then yes, you needed to replace the tire. And your lucky it was only one since your Durango is probably 4WD, which in many cases requires all four tires to be replaced if only one goes bad.

As for tire cracking, this is normal age-related wear and tear. Rubber is an organic compound and like any organic compound deteriorates with age. Some cracking is inevitable although the tires will probably wear out long before the cracking actually becomes a problem. I wouldn't fuss about it.

If the nail was in the sidewall then you had to replace the tire but if it was in the tread and it was just a small nail then you got took!
as far as the "matching tires"......that would depend on the amount of wear on the other tire.... if it was only a couple of months old with almost new tread He should have kissed you befor he did that BS to you.... if it was half worn or more then it was probably a good idea to change them both . other wise you would replace one then 6 months later the other......As far as cracking on the tire........they should not crack at all during the normal life of the tire. if they start to crack on the side walls after a short time or even a year take them back and make him give you good tires...they should not crack at all.....I have tires on my camaro that have been on there for six years and they aren't even starting to weather check a little bit.

If the nail was in the tread are it was repairable, he just wanted to make a sale.... to prevent them from cracking, use armor all on your tires at least once a month.

A nail hole could have been plugged with a little patch kit which includes a reamer and a t handle that pushes in a strip of rubber with glue. Fixed tons of tires with it. He took advantage of you.
