I was up to 75 mph on the M1 when my punto decided to slip out of fifth gear. I was not impressed as it continued to do so several more times and from around junction 11 to the end of the motorway I had to keep one hand on the gear stick in 5th and one on the wheel. It was less than a year ago I had to get a new gear box but I am now suspecting that they never actually replaced it or just swapped out some of the parts. Any helpful tips and where is reliable and cheap to get any work done in South East London?

I am not ready to buy a car yet and someone else told me it could be a fly wheel. I listened to it and I've heard knocks in engines before but this one kind of goes away when it is stopped and when it is accelerated. I asked the question because I've never heard a knock stop in the middle of acceleration. Please help?!?!

I want to replace the rear disc brake pads and rotors on a 2004 impala. Does not have drum brakes. is this done the same way as the front disc brakes??

I just replaced the brakes pads today on my 2000 Grand Caravan. I used the plain old standard brakes pads that you would get at a NAPA or Checker. I did everything right... they are installed correctly, I bled the brake lines to get the dirty brown fluid out, I refilled the brake fluid to full. I did not replace the rotors as they are still good with only a couple small scratches.

I expected bleeding the brakes would change the feel in the brake pedal, which it did. The problem is, the brake stop the van worse now then they did before. I'm not sure why. Everything is tight and they aren't leaking any fluid. I can put the pedal to the floor and it doesn't slow nearly as fast as it should.

Any ideas? Are the pads I replaced them with just crap? (The old ones were squeeking and they stopped better.)

It seems to fix the problem for a while, tonight i exchanged the battery at wal-mart so it could be driven home, Seems odd that 3 rebuilt alternators are faulty? It's my friends car. But I am going to help her change it tomorrow. Can't they test them at O'reilly Auto parts? I've never even changed an alternator before. Just batteries, starters, and stuff. I really didn't want to get involved. but she's a single mom, so I felt like I should at least try. Well ok. Thanks peoples.

My mom's car is a late 80's model buick. She's on her way to visit right now and she just called because the engine is rattling like a diesel engine. She put new oil in it. Says she floors it, but it will only hit 55. Its 9pm, and I'm worried about her - she still lacks about 80 miles. Any advice?

My husband has worked in this field for over 25 years, and he is a good worker but he is trying to pass A1 - A8, and the T series exam to get his master in both cars and trucks. He has taken these exams twice and was unable to pass all of them. He has only passed two exams out of all 10 or 12. He has gone to a community college for a year and he was an "A" student in both the trucks and autos but he is still not able to pass these exams. Apart from the ASE preparation books are there any school that "just prepare student for ASE" or are there "auto book" or video, or a special that just deal with ASE per test? Please give me detail information please.

1987 Buick-Lasabra - 3.8 L eng - standard auto transmission - 87000 total miles.
Original Tranny ( never been into)
Update; Dropped T oil pan / T oil was a burnt dark red color / Oil pan magnet had a lot of fuzzy metal shaving attached / removed & installed a new T oil filter / replace T oil pan.
/ FLUSHED & added approx 7 QTs of Premium T oil / plus added approx 6 ounces of Marvel Mystery oil / rechecked the T oil stick for capacity / Cranked up & drove around the blockS & all gears & Transmission worked perfect !
Note; This is the 2nd time i replaced Tranny filter & cleaned magnet & metal shaving.(approx 1200 miles earlier)
Now, my immediate question is what is the thoughts on life of this present transmission ? Should i trade or sell the car ?
Thank You.
Luke.

It overheats unless I have the Heater going at full speed. The heater still blows out hot but I changed the thermastat anyway. I also changed the coolant. It also wants to stall half the time when idling. This is our first major problem with this car since we bought it 3 years ago. Any DIY ideas- dont really have much money to take it to the shop.
