I set my 327/300 at 750 rpms, and have the base timing at 14 degrees advanced. No pinging, and it runs better than factory 8 degrees.

Disconnect the vacuum line from the distributor and plug the line.

If it's stock, you want to set initial timing at 8 degrees BTC. If you have a cam or hipo heads you may need to set intital timing at TDC and let the initial timing value be set by the total advance setting.

Increase the RPM to 2500 and set total advance to 32-34 degrees. You may have to play around with it a little if you get detonation when you drive it.

Most small blocks like 36 degrees of total advance, plus or minus a little.

Wants to be somewhere around 675 to 750 RPM. Disconnect the vacuum advance hose and plug it. I would set at 6° BTDC and see how it does. If there is no ping, leave it there. If you can hear a little ping under heavy acceleration, back it down to about 3-4° BTDC.

Good Luck
