My mom's car is a late 80's model buick. She's on her way to visit right now and she just called because the engine is rattling like a diesel engine. She put new oil in it. Says she floors it, but it will only hit 55. Its 9pm, and I'm worried about her - she still lacks about 80 miles. Any advice?

Its not overheating, we know that. Thing is, she's in the middle of nowhere... I hate to make her stop, and she sure doesn't want to... She's only got about 30 miles to go. I think she can make it, I just keep praying! Thanks for the great answers!

It sounds like the car is overheating. Have her get stopped asap or serious engine damage will occur. Make sure no one opens the radiator cap till the car is cool. The temp can cause 3rd degree burns. Have her top off the coolant with straight water for now.

It sounds like the car is over heating....for what reason I don't know but this is typical of a car that is overheating. I would suggest you call her and tell her to pull over in a safe area such as a quick stop or what have you and go get her. this in not a good thing.

Might be the motor mounts. That would account for the rattle and rumble....but as for the strange speed, sounds like it could be the tranmission. Only a certified ASE mechanic can tell you for sure.

Hei, clean the fuel injection parts, replace the old oxygen sensors. Adjust the tapped correctly. It is called VALVE Clearance.
