I think you mean the "heads". It serves two purposes. One is to resurface the sealing areas, the other would be to increase compression ratios. It can increse HP, but can also lead to trouble. In overhead cam engines, the cam timing can be severely affected.

Best to run your ideas through a local speed shop, or engine builder.

shaving the headers merely gives them a true fit to the head. it saves on gaskets and may give you some more ponys if there was a leak before you shaved them

i own a repair shop,,it helps it run better and perform better.its a pretty good job to do if you have never done it before ,,it takes a lot of time and Patience to do and each pipe has to be the same,i wouldn't attempt it,if i didn't have the right tools for it like a good die grinder and such,but it does help one run better good luck i hope this help,s.

it just makes them totally flat so you don't have to go and keep putting new header gaskets on every month
