Starters are pretty easy pickens. On Ford, they are usually held by two bolts situated close to the area where the engine and tranny join. It will often be on the passenger side and close to bottom for easier access.
Once the bolts are out, you just remove it, label and disconnect the wires (have the battery unhooked already). Make sure they give you the one for automatic tranny. Its ususally different from manual tranny models.

if it's the one I think it is 2.9 v6 the starter is on the drivers side with very little room . dissconnect the battery, take the cable restraint off next to the starter for the hot cable this will give you a little slack, take the starter bolts out, pull the starter forward and tilt the nose or tail down so it will pass everything in the way ,once out in the open you can lay the starter down on the floor and remove the hot cable.
I worked on an 88 ranger 2.9v6 4x4 the battery is on the passengers side and the hot cable runs under the engine from the starter relay to the cable restraint on the side of the engine block near oil pan level then over to the connection on the starter on the drivers side .The 2wheel model might have more room the front axle drive shaft is near the starter on the 4x4 model but the starters are mounted identicle .

Haha, yeah that one is a good one. Also, you might need to shim it though. I think some starters come with shims. If not, cut open a coke can and use it. It's thin enough. You'll know when it sounds right.
