Buying & Selling - January 2007

We recently got a loan for a car and the car dealer could not get the loan apporoved so we made a second down payment was needed. We were then told that the second installment of the down payment could be paid later. The car dealer told us that the down payment is something he himself would repossess the car over and that he would "turn the other way" after we told him we would not sign another contract because we knew we could not afford it until a little later. a few weeks pass and I lose my job and get another job (Me being the cosigner) the bank denies the loan and the salesman comes and takes the car. The sales man then says if i have proof I have another job we can have the car back. Alternatively he says that if i cannot provide proof or refuse to resign he will finalize the reposession. So we signed another contract, the only thing was that he wanted to keep the contract. as u can probably tell there are a lot of questions I have about my rights.

I bought a used car 3.5 months ago fro $7500 now I find out that the engine is going and it will cost me around $1200 for a new engine + installation. Should I get a lawyer and try to get my money back for the car? I am in Canada :)

I'm beginning to look into buying an older Mercedes (late 70s, early 80s) because I want to use biodiesel fuel. I like the price of the older vehicles and I know that they can get upwards of 300,000-400,000 miles (the vehicle I'm looking at has 188,000 miles). I live in an area where biodiesel is plentiful.

I'm just beginning my research and am going to be very thorough in considering every aspect. I was just curious if there's any drawbacks that I should be thinking about right off the bat. I know diesels are expensive to repair and don't start in cold weather (which can be dealt with easy enough). Anything else I should be thinking about?

So I drive ALOT anywhere from 50-100 miles a day. So I need something with GREAT mileage...I need something affordable......something that can take a lot of wear and tear.
What make/model would you recommend?

I bought a used car from a small used car dealership and within the first week it has a problem, the check engine light is on and its running poorly. I have not signed for the financing yet, but i have paid $1400 down. The car salesman said he wasn't going to charge me for the new part, so i asked about labor and he said he wanted to charge me $50, i told him i don't think i should have to pay that, but he did not give me a definitive response after that. Lets say he fixes it and i manage to get him to not charge me, at that time i will sign for the loan, but then lets say another 3 days later something else breaks and so now i have already signed for the loan, do i have any protection at all? Nowhere in the sale was anything mentioned about a warranty, but he also didn't say "as is" anywhere either. Someone has told me the seller or dealer has to warrant a used car for 30 days, is this true? Are there any laws or time frames that protect me from something else breaking right away?

I am trying to make a choice between BMW and mercedes, i dont know which one is better, i dont even know which i want to buy but both cars have alot of pros and cons, Bmw is the ultimate driving machine, it has probably the best looks a car could get, i havent seen a car that looks as good as M6 Bmw has done an amazing job with the m6 and m5 and other bmers, on the other hand Mercedes Benz has the Amg models which are powerfull, I think Mercedes is more powerfull company than Bmw but is this true, i am looking for answers from car experts or past owners of these two brands, truely which one of these two brand is worth to trust, which one will have less repairs, but is fast and catches everyones eye in the streets.

I'm going to be in L.A. for four months...doing a non-paid internship, and classes for my final semester of college. I need a car. What is the cheapest option for me? I hear renting a car is expensive.

They make so much money already. Once they buy your car from you, they can sell it off or re-finance it to someone else and make more money again. I know that there are auto payment-takeover companies, but "subleasing" and such concepts are technically not allowed.

If I go to a cheap dealership and buy a vehicle (lets just say) for $500.00 and drive it home and put it in a store parking area and I sell it for $1000.00 without having permission from the state of California or the DMV etc...Is it legal? What are the requirements to doing so and Is there any paper work I need to maintain and from who/where?

Safety rating is important, and by small, I mean an SUV that is not really long, especially in front.
