Luxury is typically Lexus, Acura, BMW, or Mercedes. All have a small SUV. You should drive them all and see what suits your tastes.
Buying an expensive car is like getting married, better be sure it is what you want because it will cost a lot to get out of it

A Toyota Highlander can be optioned up pretty nice, as can a Honda Pilot. The new Mazda CX-7 looks interesting, and a used Lexus RX300 is still a very solid vehicle. I have a friend that has the Murano, and that too is a nice vehicle.
Toyota - reliable, good resale, rides nice, bland styling
Honda - see Toyota - more power - best mid size SUV
Mazda - new, smaller, peaky turbo 4 cylinder, a little unrefined
Nissan - strong motor, interesting looks, CVT transmission
Lexus - would have to be used, snazzier version of Highlander
I would avoid Chrysler/GM/Ford - high depreciation, mediocre reliability, usually on truck frames, not as well made/refined

Acura RDX is an excellent choice. Top marks for reliability and incredible resale value. It's very nice looking, has a turbo engine and superb handling and performance with stunning interior.
It's pretty tough to beat.
You might cross-shop the Mazda CX-7 and on the more expensive, slightly bigger side, the Lexus RX.
I do not recommend Nissan or Infiniti. While their products have great appeal on the surface, their reliability and quality have been sub-par historically. This is not just my opinion, it can be easily confirmed with a little research. Consumer Reports will tell you all you need to know on that.

i'd reccomend a 2002 ish Toyota 4Runner. it incredibly is lots extra reliable than maximum SUVs, the Trailblazer is terrible and have been given picked as between the Worst automobiles of 2009 by skill of Yahoo automobiles. Cannibal- You suggested the ordinary Trailblazer no longer the SS, there's a great distinction.
