Depends on what is important to you and the price you want to pay. The new Jetta is a great car and very safe, Honda's are always a safe bet and the new Scion's are nice. Lastly, Saturn which is a safe and decent car has the cheapest factors for insurance purposes... so I would also reference how much your insurance will be on each car you drive. Good luck

Look at it from a Total Cost of Operation view. What does it cost to BUY + OPERATE.

Consider:
1. cost of buying the vehicle
2. cost of insurance varies by the repair cost of the vehicle (after you narrow you shopping list to 2-3 models, check with your insurance agent)
3. consider the car's rating for gas mileage
4. go to a book store and look at a copy of Consumer Reports. Check for the repair history (High, Low, Average) for the model.

Look at some Consumer Reports mags to see what they recommend as Best Buys for used cars. They do that about once per year.

My wife and I have own 3 Hondas since 1990. Probably over 250,000 miles. Can only recall 1 major repair during that period. A 1991 Accord, a 2002 Civic, and a 2002 CR-V. The Cr-V cost the most. I like my little Civic - according to Consumer Reports it has almost as much room as an Accord, but it gets about 34 miles per gallon.

focus is pretty good I have one and the engine seems durable no problems just cheap inside but still a very good car. You should also consider a used Impala with 50k or less for around 10 grand. Impalas are very good cars from my own expirence. I haven't owned any hondas or jetta's but Ive been in them and their quality is a bit more ( But over priced ) than the focus but the engines are pretty much the same. Impala or a malibu are very good, inside is good and can get a used one pretty cheap!

Toyota is a decent car. Nice size and good on gas. I had my car for a while now and did not cost a lot and does not leak oil. Just the basic check ups and new tires and left with 1,600 and some money left over. I am pretty sure you can find better deals but mine had low milleage. Hope it works for you.

Honda or Toyota. Good on gas, run forever if taken care of and you can get one about 10 yrs old cheap. Just look in the classifieds or at a used car lot.

Hondas- I hear that they're cheap, and the old ones still look fairly decent. Its good on gas, so thats something you will want to consider.

Neon, Civic, Corolla, Turcel, Focus, Escort. Just stay away from european cars and gm small cars. I would personally go for the Escort.
