When starting there is a grinding sound and motor will not turn over. It will not push start either. I was told it would be the starter clutch, but after taking apart i found there are two allen bolts on the starter clutch that are finger tight. Could this cause slippage and Should these be tight and could it be the problem?

I am 24 and currently I make 61k and have 30k in the bank. I live in New Jersey so weather can be a factor but not a huge one. I take the bus alot for work to go into NYC but still need to drive to it. I am currently living at home so do not have rent, but I do pay car insurance and other bills.

This whole thing is new to me and I have no idea what % I should be spending etc etc. So any suggestions on types of cars or how much I should be looking to spend would be appreciated.

I've got a dead import car battery sitting in my car. I haven't been using my car for about three months and about a week ago, I noticed that the anti-theft light on the radio wasn't blinking any more.

I have a 1A battery trickle charger, more meant for motorcycle batteries.

I've got a 24hr lamp switch timer where I can connect the trickle charger and have rigged it up to charge the battery in 15 minute spurts.

Time is not an issue in charging the battery. I'll probably use the car again in about a month when the weather gets really bad.

My question is how long would it usually take to charge a battery if I were to continously charge it from 0 to 100% and how many total hours a day would you recommend to charge the battery to slowly bring it back up to 100% in about a month? Remember, I'll be charging it in 15 minute spurts to be easy on the battery and give it a chance to 'rest' between 15 minute charges.

Thanks

When I came back from my parallel parking spot, I was sandwiched between two vehicles. The car in front of me was less than 3 inches from my front bumper. The car behind me was also less than 3 inches from my rear bumper. Should I wait for one of them (for god knows how long)? Get one of them towed? Or ram them to make some room?

How do you like it? I want something from 06-08. Staying away from Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi and Ford. They suck.
Something under 17,000

I'm considering:
-Nissan
-Pontiac
-Kia
-Hyundai
-Dodge
-Chrysler

If you own a car made by one of the above makes, how do you like it?

My Impala transmission has completely failed now.

I am very attracted to the idea of permanently living aboard a narrowboat. I used to row regularly when I was at school and used to love the canal especially on a winter morning when it was incredibly quiet and yet in the city. I am a nurse so I could relocate more or less anywhere within commuting distance of a hospital so would be happy to go wherever I could find a residential mooring. I am single so no partner or kids to worry about squeezing in. My main worries are that I would spend all my savings/borrow money and then find that in a few years the boat was no longer habitable and had depreciated so I'd have nothing and also that I'd miss having neighbours and find it an isolating experience with just passing tourists for company. What is your advice ?

I have a 2001 porsche and this lady just tboned me going through a red light. Now My insurance company wants to offer me about 5000 dollars less then what I can replace it for. I sent them 10 ads in the area close to my car to show them, and they in turn had me appraised by an independent agency. This agency, BIG BLOCK, came back with a dozen examples that all had more miles then mine, and adjusted me .16 cents a mile. After doing depreciation calculations on their examples, the average dep per mile was .60 cents per mile!!!! This changes their evaluation by about 7-8000 dollars overall.
Its been two weeks since they totaled my car. What should I do if they keep trying to low ball me?

I have a 2000 model Chevy Astro with AWD. For some time now, it has developed a noise that sounds like a thumping underneath. The noise occurs after running up to speed and then letting off the gas. At about 40 and below, it does not occur. I have checked the U-joints visually, but they appear to be OK. I am suspecting the AWD transfer case as the source. Can any of you mechanically talented people shed any light on this one?
