It can sound scratchy when pushed on lightly, it can clatter or rattle or smell burnt. These sounds can also be from incorrect gain settings.
The purpose of the gain is to match the signal volts RMS coming from the source (CD player, etc.) to the input of the amp.
Here is a guide that will help you set the gain correctly http://www.datafilehost.com/download.php?file=6d26c621
You'll need a multi-meter (AC voltmeter), Microsoft Excel and a way to burn an audio CD from an MP3.
If you don't have Excel, e-mail me and I'll send you a condensed version sparky3489@yahoo.com
This site http://www.subwoofertools.com/forum/setgain.asp will also do the same.

If the Coil burned out, it may not do anything, no sound. Sometimes as said it sound crackle or distorted. If, the rubber/foam is broke around the outside edge sometimes this can be fixed. I have used finger nail polish, but, a very thin silicon rubber can work. Whatever you use just be sure to test it on a very small section as some things will eat up the foam instead of fix it.

Depending on what is blown and how it happened there can be many sounds...Most mechanical failures will stop the speaker from working all together, or otherwise will crackle and or simply not play bass notes clearly. If it is thermal than you will be more likely to smell it and hear a pop or see the smoke than anything.
Hopefully you didnt kill your speaker....good luck.

Sometimes it will, sometimes it wont. It may crackle a lot or it may not work at all. It depends on how bad you blew it.
