On this particular truck, you will need to remove the entire instrument panel as well as the console to access the heater box. While it's apart, it would be VERY prudent to check the temperature blend door. On model years 1995 to 1998 Explorer/Ranger models, they are famous for breaking. Unfortunately, replacement requires replacing the entire heater box, since the the blend door itself, is NOT serviced separately from the box. You would be very wise to have it replaced as well, if that's the case. A job like this is highly recommended to be left to a professional. There are too many steps to list here. Expect to pay about eight hours labour for this repair. Hope this helps.

Ford built their cars and trucks at the factory to where the majority of the work would have to be done on their cars and trucks at a Ford dealership. Ford built their vehicles with the heater core behind the right fender which will have to be removed in order to replace it. Double check this with the proper Manufacture year of the Chiltons manual.

Are you sure it's the heater core leaking ? Does the leak smell like antifreez ? If not you may just have a plugged condensate drain for the a/c.
