Hi I have a question regarding 457 deferred compensation plan. First am I still eligible to make contributions of $2000 to a traditional Roth directly out of my paycheck before filing is due and credit it towards 2006. 2nd, if I am allowed to do that will my employer be required to reissue me a new W2 with a lower taxable income with the IRA contribution on it. What this will do for me is bring my tax liability down $800 from the lower taxable income of $2000 and the $200 saver credit. In essence I get an immediate return of 40% on my $2000 investment. Hope somebody can help me.

My parents have been filing joint returns. My dad has been unemployed for over 10 years. I have been providing more than half of their living expenses as she is not making enough to support both of them. Can she file a tax return for herself and I claim him as a dependent and head of household (they are living with me)?

She plans to retire this year and will be qualified for SS benefit. Is it true that he can also acquire some SS $$ because she is eligable? If she files her own tax return, and he becomes my dependent, will that effect his SS $$ status? How about any impact to his government paid health care benefits, namely Medicare & Medical?

i thought that i had a "job" being "hired" by a lawyer. the other lawyers (not part of the firm but renting space in the office) were paying my "employer" for hrs of the wk I did work for them regardless of whether on not i did work those hrs for them. they need to be able to "expense" the cost. i think that i was an "employee" vs a "contract" however regardless of my tax situation (which does not look good) i want the other 2 lawyers to be able to decuct their costs

In filing a tax refund, does it matter if you are less than 6 months here in the US? Can you not get the same tax exemption as for those who are already living in the US more than 6 months?

Ok, I'm in a weird position. I have a W2 where the amounts shown in box 16 and 18, State and City Taxes respectively for New York State and New York City are not showing the right amounts. I can tell that the numbers are too low. I am a part resident in the state and city of New York - I moved here from Florida.

After doing some investigation, the discrepancy is because of the fact that the COO at the time did not file my address change promptly with our 3rd party payroll company, Gevity. Because of this I have a portion of my wages that was not taxed by NY state income tax rates nor was it taxed by NY City rates.

I am just now learning this. What do I do? I do not have the capability right now to pay the taxes that I will probably owe. I gave my employer all the needed information to make these changes in a timely manner. And *I think* there is some liability with my company as far as that goes and ones was on them. Help. What can I do?

OK in a nutshell, me and my hubby owe $400 on taxes. We tried filing a couple different ways(single, joint, ect) and we still owe no matter what. We cant get earned income cause no kids and we make too much $.

My question is: Is this normal for people who are married amd make decent money with no children? I'm not going to have children before Im ready just to get a bigger tax check.

Oh, we have been married for 4 years, and every year we have gotten back $300+ until this year. Nothing has changed(like filing status), and we do have a professional do our taxes.

I heard that if you save all of your reciepts throughout the year, and the sales tax is $1500 or more, you can get a deduction on your tax return. Is this true, and are there any restrictions on what you purchase?
