Do you have a TIN (taxpayer identification number)? Is that the ID number you are refering to? If so, you can file a tax return. You aren't eligible for Earned Income Credit with a TIN. If you haven't received a TIN or Social Security number from the government, you can't file a tax return.

uare you in the country legally? If so all you have to do is go down and apply for a ssn all it takes is a certified copy of your birth certificate as far as using a false number I do believe that is fraud and you could get into quite a bit of trouble for this. When your employer submits your tax id number to the IRS they will figure out that ou are using a false number so I would try to get this fixed ASAP

What you are doing is illegal; you're probably working illegally. If you really have nothing to hide and are entitled to the privilege of finding a job and enjoying the fruits of your labor, you wouldn't be working under illegal tax-ID numbers or illegal/invalid SSN.
