My husband is the one in the family who works, I stay home with the kids. We have received all of his W-2's and while double-checking the name,SS# and the such I noticed something on one of them. The little box where it says how much federal taxes were taken out, well it's empty. I KNOW they took out federal taxes. But, it's been a while since he worked there and I doubt I have any check stubs to prove it. How do I go about getting this taken care of? Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

My friend opened a business in her name for her father. He buys and resells used automobiles. She was asking me if she had to file anything special. I think she said he did cash deals only, and I wasn't sure how that would be categorized.

How can I help her sort through this?

I was w-2 for most of last year. Then in October I quit m job and went out on my own (real estate). I was employed at a salary of $32k/year, and made 27990. After that I recieved about $8k from the profit of a sale of a condo that i did not own or anything, just profit shared from working on it. I know I have my W-2, and I will be given a 1099 for the 8k, but how much do I pay on that 8k? I usually use Turbotax....will it autopoulate, or do I need to consult someone?

Hi,
I'm wondering if there are any tax related benefits for me to claim (or any other resources out there) for absorbing the housing expense related to caring for my aging father. In 2002 we took out a 2nd mortgage to build a father-in-law apartment on to our existing home as my father was very ill and had no where to live and our existing home was not large enough to accomadate him. Although we were hoping to be able to write off some of the expense in building this dwelling (it cost us $55,000), we never did find a write off option on taxes. I'm wondering if indeed there was some sort of write off that we could have taken (or could still take)? Secondly, my dad is low income (social security & works pt/self employed as barber) so, we don't charge him anything to live here, however, we absorb the cost of him living here (heat, mortgage). Any ideas to aid us in maximizing resources to help financially (ie: taxes, senior organizations, etc) would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks.

We have the opportunity to put money into a flexible spending account through work. Should we do it for a daycare since we could also deduct daycare from our taxes? Also, we can put money in for medical, we currently can put in $1000 a year. But we just bought a hot tub that we plan to deduct from our taxes. So would it be better not to put any money into the flexible spending or keep the $1000 and use the rest to deduct from our taxes?

If you made 75000 and your spouse made 30000, and you claimed single and 1 and your spouse claimed single and 0, and you got a $2000 tax refund, what would you do to adjust it so you got less refund next time? Would you claim single and 2 instead of single and 1?

I filed my taxes last week and am receiving a refund of over $8000. However I received a 1099 for my 401-K that I cashed out last summer. It was $36,000. My employer withheld the 20% and I thought that was it. Now I guess I have to file an amended return. What will this do to my refund? Could I possibly owe now? I made $110,000 in 2006 filed jointly. What should I do? I am sure this will put me in a higher bracket and screw everything up. Would I difinitely be caught if I ingored it? Thanks!

I sold my home in 2006 that I bought in 1999 and qualifies as my personal residence. (lived in it 3 of the last 5 yrs). The basis in this property is less than the proceeds resulting in a loss. Personal losses are not deductible.

I sold rental property in 2006 resulting in a long term capital gain.

Can I reduce the amount of my long term gain by the amount of the loss on the sale of my principal residence?

We were forced to take an early withdrawal of our pension funds and closed the account. Of course, now that tax time is here our penalties for withdrawing early are incredibly high. Does anyone know a way around paying such high taxes on this withdrawel? I'm wondering if we agree to pay the pension administrator back if maybe we can avoid paying taxes. Any insight or ideas you can give me will be so much appreciated. Thanks & God Bless You.

They charge $30 more for state+fed+e-file. But isn't e-filing free through the IRS websight. OR does H&R block make the software so you can't use the free IRS e-file.
