The Federal tax on fuel is supposed to be used to build new highways and to improve old ones...and some of it actually does go for that purpose. However, it is added to the general fund from which, among other things, politicians use for pork projects (like $150,000 for a study on why a tricycle tips over or $30,000,000 for the bridge to nowhere in Alaska) to enhance their political image and get reelected by their constituents.

That is why those voters, who don't give a damn about politics and what's going on in government, are doomed to be governed by their inferiors...I want that money back in my paycheck.

We all use fuel and can't do without it. The Government see's this as an easy method of raising revenue and has got so used to it that without it the Chancelor would have a huge defecit in his budget.

Because it furnishes huge revenue. Most items are taxed by both the state and federal government.
